Maybe ya'll can answer. Has anyone ever taken a Rem. 700 BDL and had all the shiny coat stripped off and a multi coat , hand rubbed, oil finished applied?
It would have to be professional. I would screw it up bad !!!

Buzz, what is your objective? Do you want to change the appearance of the stock or reduce the shine for hunting?

change appearance. The stock has really nice figure, just not a fan of the finish?

Sorry for the delay; went to the gun show in Fort Worth today. I had a suggestion to reduce the shine for hunting...never mind.
If you have some nice wood, a hand-rubbed oil finish would look great.

Buzz, have you considered a furniture varnish stripper like Homer Formby's? I did a few stocks this way back in the day and really helped minimize sanding and damage to checkering. Follow up with your choice of stain color and several light coats of tung oil and you'll be set.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

It's a BDL. Wondering if the chemical strippers will destroy the forend. I've done an ADL, but never a BDL for this reason. I really enjoy a nice oil finish.

The Homer Formby's solution works well on varnish/shellac/lacquer finishes, but not too well on poly-based stuff. Those usually require a more aggressive chemical or mechanical stripping like sanding or scraping.

Maybe better to just buy a new stock.
