I've shot a few deer in the rain, so I don't think it would have much of an effect on them at all. Definitely making it harder for us to get in and out though.

They're already making scrapes and cruising for doe here.

They're already making scrapes and cruising for doe here. Yep, seeing several scrapes. Saw a buck with a doe today and he wasn't about to let her out of his sight. And unfortunately I'm beginning to see more highway kills also. All this tells me the first round of the rut is right on schedule here, western Erath county. Next round, about Thanksgiving

It will be a wet rut. Water doesn't get in the way of breeding now does it, lol? They were revved up and chasing, rubbing and tarsal glands black as tar last Monday morning. The does seemed to be where they usually are and the bucks not far behind.

I don't think the weather, be it unseasonably hot, cold, dry, wet, etc. will change it at all.

I know the rain doesn’t stop people from makin whoopie, so I can’t imagine it will Do anything to the rut...might make it a little less obvious to us and make it more difficult to hunt the rut if the rain keeps up, but deer gonna do what deer do during the rut.

Make it more difficult for some folks to go, but the deer will still do the deal... Thinking more...make it earlier or later??? Quicker or longer? Happens around the same time every year. How long it lasts depends on your buck doe ratio. I saw my first mature buck tending a doe this morning. Cooler weather you will see more day time activity. When the weather warms up, and more human activity they will move more at night. Not sure where you hunt, but my favorite time to hunt is when I can go. I antler hunt until the 1st of December, then I put doe in the freezer, usually 4. Then its back to horn hunting if I don't already have one...

From what I was told by a biologist, absolutely nothing for the actual breeding part. I live and hunt in Wood Co. He said that 90 % of all does in this area are bred between Nov 17 - Nov 23 every year, regardless of weather. Hunting is best in the 2 weeks before this because a small percentage of does do breed then and there is competition for them. Once a lot start breeding, hunting goes way down hill because there are plenty of girls to go around.
All that being said, I didn't believe cool wet weather encourages more overall movement. The boys are ready and frisky. I know I see a lot more deer when it's cool than when it's hot, regardless of rut.

Make it more difficult for some folks to go, but the deer will still do the deal... Man, I just love my Filson waxed cotton gear for hunting in this weather! Over the years, I have found it easier to get close to game, while hunting in rainy weather. I don’t hunt downpours, or lightning storms, but I do hunt practically anything else. Bucks seem less concerned about hunting pressure in inclement weather. You would think, deer would be more wary during these times, but Based on my experiences, they tend to drop their guard. And it always seemed the cooler rainy weather would bring out heavy rutting instincts. My favorite weather to hunt.

Give me cooler, drizzly weather anytime. See more animals than on those bluebird days.

Sometimes a good rain is what gets it going. Might make it earlier this year in parts of the state with an early rut?
Down south, it's too far away to have an affect, IMO.

Saw a larger deer chasing a small one outside Benbrook from highway today by the river bottom at 10 am today. Too far away to see what they were.

After driving down Hwy 79 to Bufflao from Dogwood City, then I-45 to Madisonville, then Hwy 21 thru Bryan to Caldwell, then Hwy 36 to Brenham yesterday morning I'd say The Rut Is ON. I saw more deer yesterday than I've seen in years and ALL the bucks were frisky..either pushing on each other or activley chasin' the Girls.
Halfway thru Buffalo, just past the grocery store 3 deer ran across Hwy 79, dodging traffic and up the Service Rd hillside on the north side at 7:30'ish. Must have seen 50-60+ deer in the 3 hour trip...and I was driving. My partner was yelling there's one so often it got really boring. Ron
