While deer are curious critters, they are way more causious, than hog. Dropped a big hog over mile back in woods, the rest ran for cover. Tried dragging it way too big, so started gutting, rest hogs started coming back in clearing, dropped second hog, rest took several steps, then went back ta eating. Eating over came fear. Had ta chase em away. Back packing easiest way bringing out hogs, slit down back take backstrap, quarters, roll over repete.

Could have just been a slight shift in wind direction, or the hog was hungry enough to not care.

deer have embeded from centries of being hunted ta being more causious around hymans. Ones raised in pens, have been around hymans & feel less threatened, sorce of food & shelter. Hogs have been domesticated for centries, less fear of humans. Just my As far as wich has keener smell i'd agree with Gary, hog stinks worse ... Your guess tis as good as mine.

You have made a whole lot of assumptions here and I don't feel like you are apt to arrive at a proper answer. First, which has a better nose? Hog. Already answered. Second, is your ozonics working properly? Sure, which means it isn't likely really doing much of anything to control your scent. Third, so a doe was at the feeder and started stomping and snorting and ran off. Why do you assume you were the cause? Maybe the doe did wind you. Maybe you made some noise and the doe didn't wind you. Before you tell me that you were perfectly still and silent, from what I have seen of hunter explanations versus their behavior, "perfectly still and silent" has a wide range of motion and noise. Maybe the deer didn't like the sound of the ozonics. Maybe, there was something else going on that you know nothing about. Maybe there was a bobcat in the brush nearby that you never saw. For some reason, hunters often like to assume that the only reason in the world that a deer will ever alert is because they have been winded, never considering or actually knowing if the animal in question can scent them or not, and often not taking actual wind into consideration. You aren't the only animal or only stimulus out there that will spook a deer. Fourth, Sapper brought up a good point. Maybe both animals knew you were there. People wrongfully like to assume that animal behavior corresponds with animal capability. Therefore, if the deer reacted and the hog didn't then the hog must not be capable of sensing you, right? That would be a problematic assumption without additional information. It reminds me of the folks that claim hogs can't see red or green light because the hogs didn't react to the light when it was shined on them. I have shined white light on hogs and had them not react. Doesn't mean the hogs are blind to 600 candlepower. It just means they didn't associate it with needing to enact a response.

Elephant has probably the best sense of smell...basic rule of thumb, the longer and larger the nose, the better the sense of smell...FYI, deer are just animals looking to run from something (anything) 24/7...hogs are more like rhinos, they will stand their ground and challenge you. Basically, double naught spy did a good job of explaining the long version...carry on...

Lots of hog votes but I'd still say WT
I've saw WT's stop dead in their tracks at 100 yards and stare straight in my direction
Hogs, they seem to just pick up the pace and move a little faster somewhere.
Maybe it's a combo of nose and caution that gives WT the edge to me
Could be the hog, not sure

The maturer animal of either species will be more likely to be warier. I have seen a buck sniff where I had walked and turn around and run. I was not there but had a video camera hidden and caught his reaction as soon as he smelled where I had walked in to hide the camera. I have had big boar smell me at about 80 yards as he circled my tripod.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Don't know about smell, but I do know hogs have one heck of a sense of hearing. Was watching 2 sows with piglets at the feeder 45 yards away. Inside my elevated box blind and just "clicked" beer can snap and they was gone. I didn't crack the can open which is loud, just clicked it with fingernail. I was amazed!

I've read otherwise (Elk's nose is not as acute as a whitetail's).....but I'm not disputing your claim. Do you think what you describe "could be" from the lack of human interaction commonly associated with elk habitat?
It would make sense to me......since some of the guys who hunt big woods have similar issues with whitetails......that those of us who hunt where human scent is more prevailant don't have to worry about "as much".
Just a thought...

I think their reaction to people/hunters has way more to do with the amount of hunting pressure than how well they can sense smell.

From my experience hogs have a better sense of smell. One big difference I have noted in hogs and deer that goes along with being busted is most times if a deer hears, sees, or smells something out of place it will stop and look to see what caused it. This is why the whole "meeeeehhhh" sound to stop them broadside for a shot works. However hogs in my experience as soon as they notice something threatening they bolt, no questions asked. Another big difference is that deer are just by nature more cautious than pigs, leading to possibly more busted hunting situations.

I've seen more hogs stop where I've walked into a stand than deer. I think hogs have a better nose personally.

Deer would be my guess. Hogs have a much stronger smell to them on average, which I would speculate would hamper them picking up other scents around them that deer otherwise would detect. No facts to back my opinion, lol.

I don’t know. They both have excellent noses.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

My vote goes to the whitetail. Not even close in my book.
