Is this ammo ok to shoot from a Remington 722?
I read reciently where the +P ammo should not be used in older guns. I have had no issue so far, but curious of other opinions. Currently shooting Hornady 117g BTSP +P @ 2780 FPS.
Ammo selection has improved, but the rifle is not accurate from a shooters perspective.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think you should be fine. I believe those warning were for conversions of old surplus rifles. Many of those turn of the century rifles were sporterized to new calibers at the time when the 257R was very popular.

I just looked that model up and it was made in 308 and 243 win which means it can easily handle 257R.

Yes, it should be fine. But, I have not had much luck with the 117-120 grain bullets in the 257 Roberts. The 90-100 grain shoot very well. In my load testing with the 257 Rob, the 100 grain bullets definitely shot the best.

When I had a 257 Bob it was a Remington 700 classic, I loaded it up with 100gr partitions and took it hunting. Those shot very close to MOS either a hair above or a bit better and killed everything I shot at with it. If I were hunting with it today it would mostlikely have the same load or one worked up around the 110 Accubond

Agree with 100 grain bullets shooting better. Mine shoots 115-120 pretty well but shoots 100 grains better.

I looked at a box of Nosler 100g @ 3000 fps, at $50.00 + per box, may keep shooting the Hornady’s.
Used for deer and hogs and works great on both, just not a “head shooter”.
Chad, I will send you an email to discuss a load for this gun and a few others. Need to follow up on our discussion about the .308 Norma Mag also. Be in touch soon.
It’s my sons rifle now, belonged to his great grandmother, passed to his mom. The stock was shortened, grandma was 4’10”. Put a packmyer recoil pad to add some length back to it and he has been shooting for over 11 years now. He doesn’t seem interested in a new stock. Probably had 2 boxes of ammo through it when we acquired it.
Thanks

Ya never know. 5 of the six 257s I have messed with, preferred 120 gr Bullets.
The 722 has basically the same action as the M700. No problem for +P Ammo

The 1st run XTR M70 Fwt Rbt's I had in the very very early '80's would only shoot WW "White Box" 100gr Silvertips ( the old style non + P aluminum tips ) worth a damn...and shot them into lil bitty dime size groups. I did load other bullets for it to get Minute of Deer ammo but 1 1/2" - 2" sized groups were common, and usally GTG for putting meat in the freezer on heart/lung body shots under 150 yards. Really frustrating though. Ron

The 90gr Sierra GameKing HP always has shot well for me in all the 25 calibers I have used it in. Also the 100 gr Speer which is hard to find around here but readily available elsewhere has shot really well with 4350 in the 25-06 and Roberts

I have a 722 also it shots 117 the best 1\2 inch groups for 3 shots , then warms up and open ups the group. I have tried 85 to 100gr and the 117 shoot the best, The 117 Winchester +p shoot good. This may be due to barrel wear for is old used gun.

My 257 is a Ruger Ultralight and it shot the Hornady SST so poorly I thought I needed a new barrel! Unfortunately to fit a 117 gr, SST in the Roberts short enough to fit the magazine in your 722 it has to be seated deeply. The Superperformance powder this ammo is loaded with is heavily compressed also. At any rate I had no problem getting the Superperformance +P speeds using IMR 4350 and seating the bullet out near the lands. I also am getting excellent accuracy, a "head" shooter it is. In fact I had no luck with factory ammo until I found a box of the old 117 GR. Remington RN factory load which is available on Ammoseek right now. Around $25. a box.

I tried 3 separate 117 grain loads in my custom 257 and they were all over the place. I tried the 100 grain Nosler loads you mentioned (MidwayUSA) and you can cover them with a quarter. So that's what I'm sticking with.

It’s killed everything we’ve ever shot with it, never needed a follow up. Most didn’t get out of sight. Keep it inside 250 and it’s been good, but....
Used the Remington 117g round nose core-lokts for years, still shoots them and the Winchester’s better than most others. Didn’t like the 117g SST from Hornady or Federal premium 120g Nosler partitions.
Picked up some Norma 100g soft points and Nosler 110g Accubonds this week to try.
Hope to shoot it soon.

Maybe a good cleaning with bore polish is in order.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
made it to the range today.
The Norma 100g soft points and the Nosler 110g Accubonds, both performed better than any 117g or 120g bullet I have tried previously.
The poi at 100 yards was almost the same, less than an inch, at 200 the Accubonds kept a tighter group.
Going 110g Accubonds for now.

Good load from what I have heard. I'm running 115 Partitions this year, loading them to 2900 fps and getting just under MOA.

110 Accubond is a very good bullet for both hunting and target if you want to use them for that.
