This afternoon I saw a WT Buck with hard antlers running around with his nose on the ground like he was after a doe in heat.

If you only got some once a year you would be wanting to jump the gun too!

If you only got some once a year you would be wanting to jump the gun too! After the rut I would purposely hang myself from the top wire of a high fence
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I will get the occasional young buck act like that in early October due to temperature change and a bit of moisture.

Rain does seem to fire them up. Seen chasing in Bow season lots of times in central tx. Not sure how much breeding was happening but chasing for sure.

I've seen that happen many times hunting the hill country especially, and the cooler weather and rain seems to really get their juices going. I've seen it on opening weekend of bow season, and right now that is only 12 days away, so it's right on cue. It does seem to happen when the bucks break off their bachelor groups.

I watched two mature bucks sparring this morning. Yesterday two young bucks were pushing each other around. Seems a little early to me.

I watched two mature bucks sparring this morning. Yesterday two young bucks were pushing each other around. Seems a little early to me. Establishing their pecking order in the bachelor group. Those hardened antlers make them bad arses. I watched a little four point a couple of years ago that thought he was the baddest thing on four legs. He was always bullying even bigger bucks than him, and one day he came out in the clearcut and started walking toward the other deer (bucks) that were feeding aready. He had his ears back and head angled to one side and hair standing up approaching the deer, and this six point just slightly bigger than him took him on. As their antlers clashed I saw a main beam go flying through the air, and it was that smart arses antler so now he only had one side and the other broken off at the base.....The victor chased his butt away and I didn't see him until the later part of the season and he still had a little attitude but he sure looked funny.

Have seen it in younger bucks (sparring), can't recall seeing one "trailing" this early tho.
