I'm looking at buying a 300 blackout for mainly hog hunting and some deer hunting under 100 yards. I wanted to get some opinions on how effective it would be for that purpose. Anyone have any opinions or experience with a 300 blackout at short distances.

Pick a good bullet in 110-150 grain range and you'll be fine. Mild report and mild recoil. Mine is actually very accurate.

Lots and lots! I have hunted for the last 4-5 years with a blk out. It is very effective with good shot placement and proper hunting bullet. I have taken many animals with my bolt gun for deer hunting and AR for night hunting. It is very effective. I prefer the 125 grain bullet, like the 125 grain SST, 125 Ballistic Tip, 125 grain Sierra SP, or 115 grain Berger. I have used them all. Good link right HERE

It’s worked on a couple of deer for me. No issues. All around 75 yards. I’d get one!

I built one last year, ordered some Hornady Full Boar and proceeded to pound a pile of hogs with it. Follow up running shots on hogs wasn't as impressive as my 6.8 but it was a fun lightweight gun. My buddy wanted it so I sold it to him but think I'll pick up another upper soon.

Man, after seeing the comments above, I have no idea how I ever killed a deer with this thing: T/C Encore with 12” heavy barrel chambered in .300 Whisper. Never had any deer complain it was not adequate...

^^^ Exactly. I laugh and shake my head to the folks who think a blk out isn't enough for deer and pigs. And who cares about the ballistics of a 300 blk out. It's not a long range round where the ballistics do not matter. It's a hunting round, or should I say killing round. Because my blk out sure didn't get the memo that the blk out doesn't kill.

Speed wise it is just under a 30/30, but with a better BC bullet...so I would figure that terminal ballistics wise it would be about the same as a 30/30. Plenty for deer and pigs out to 150-200 yards.

I have been shooting mostly pigs and a few deer with 300blk using Chads 125gr loads for a few years now and generally not further than 125 yds or so. It kills things plenty dead. No complaints.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

If everybody agreed on everything we would be a bunch of low life liberals who think if someone else has a different opinion them they are a racist homophobic etc etc. Thankfully here we can all express our opinions freely even when opinions differ. I started hunting with my AR in 556 and after realizing it just isnt enough round for me and my hunting situation (stalking at close quarters) and it wasnt enough stopping power for my comfort level. Maybe he might gain some knowledge from this. Maybe his hunting situation is different than yours. I know i wouldnt hunt hogs with a single shot pistol. Sitting in a stand sure but in real hunting situations give me an AR. Would a223 or 300 work? Yes. Are there 2 options like the grendel and spc that are a much better option for deer and hogs. Absolutely!

The only issue I have with the 300bo is cycling. I will say up front, I've never had one. My friend and I had to do a fair amount of tinkering with his to get it reliably cycle. Could it be an isolated case? Yes, possibly. The several AR's in other calibers I built for myself were all gtg from the beginning. I'm not anti 300bo, just not what I chose to use on hogs.

Yes, but the Grendel is on a whole different price point and performance in comparison to the blkout. The 6.8 is a good one, too, and has decent ammo options priced good. But the blk out has a much more carry over from using 223 components in an AR. Plus, it is a great round for basic hunting and killing deer. I'm not saying it's the best and end all be all. But it certainly works. But your first comment was you didn't like the ballistics? Which ballistics, long range or terminal? Long range, who cares on this round. Terminal wise, the blk out is great with the right bullets with good shot placement. There's nothing wrong with good shot placement of a 125 grain hunting bullet in the blk out.

Chad, super oddly enough, and your question brings up one of my own. If you wanted to shoot subs and supers from the same rifle I guess you would put marks on an adjustable gas block to refer to?

I shoot supers and subs from mine and have never had to adjust anything, it's a Radical firearms upper 8.5" upper and CMMG lower.

If you have an adjustable gas block, you would want to open it up all the way to allow as much gas back to the action for cycling for subs. You don't want to have it closed off restricting the gas flow.
On the supers, you could work the gas block settings, but it should work. Getting the supers to cycle should be the easy part. Most of the AR's that have cycling issues had one of 2 common items. 1- they built the AR, or 2- they were using P-mags. If they built it, then the parts and pieces are not set up right and something is off.

See my post this week in Ammo, and Hog hunting page "Ambush Two Sows". I like it just fine for your purpose.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Im not familiar with a short or long range ballistic charts just the normal ballistics chart which typically shows from 0 to 500 or more.
Lets not make this in to a pissing match. He asked for opinions. Im giving him my opinion of that round. I dont care what the price points and carry overs are.
I think it is a bad round for a beginner hunter especially who may not always make the best shots. My original thread didn't say I thought this round sucks "which I do" I just said there are better options.
I stand by my thread!! There are much better options for your AR. Especially if you are not a seasoned hunter.

I built and have been shooting a 300 Whisper for years, both sub and super and I have found that it performs quite well on deer and piggies. I've had no issues of FTF or FTE. It eats everything I throw in its magazine. 1 .25 inch groups at 100 yards with my hand loads. My shots while hunting with it are generally under 150 yards.

I appreciate all the responses and opinions. I did considered the 6.8 and 308 calibers originally but I like the fact that I can convert the 300blk out caliber into a 5.56 in the same ar platform. I am a very experienced hunter and consider myself a good shot but mainly with bigger caliber 30.06. I want a AR mainly for hogs but also to be used for deer and the 5.56 conversion won't break the bank if I want to have some fun.
