What is the best coon bait, using jaw traps. I have used Tuna cuz thats what I had. Caught 2 racoons and a hog...lol. I have some chicken trimmings that I have collected over the weekend. I hear alot about marshmellows, but seems like they would have no smell to draw them. I know little about the tricks of the trade so any advise would be great. I trap around my feeder pen in the brush so as not to catch a deer, dont mind catching the hogs . I have 4 more coons on my feeders, so need to catch em asap. Thanks in advance.

ive used alot of stuff, redbone told me that the lil mini marshmallows are the way to go! I typically use corn in places that cattle and deer cant go so as i wont catch the dogs or cats that come to all the oter goodies.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner for all coons on the planet. Quote:

The only thing I advise is that you look at what is available for food, and mix some of that in there too. They are hungry little boogers but they are smart.
What are you doing with them if you don't mind me asking? I have a fresh pup and would pay for the shipping if you would skin them. Hit me up if you would like.

I do use the mini marshmallows though. Those coons have a sweet tooth something awful.

They seem to like high fructose corn syrup pretty good. Had a few 1 gallon jugs at the ranch tied up in trees with a very small hole to drip.......yeah....they didn't last but a few weeks and the whole bottoms were chewed off. Anything sweet will draw em in.

Hang a piece of tin foil above or in the trap for some reason they cannot help but see what it is that is shining.

wrap it in foil even when I am covering them? I have heard to do that when trapping in water, they will think its a dead fish or something

Why mess with all those things? We use cat or dog food and catchem whenever we want. Cheap and I bet you already have some...

When I was a kid we tried steel traps and only found a leg left. We probably wasn't on top of them soon enough. They sure have been playing heck with my deer feeders lately. Totally dismantled the battery, timer, and all the wiring. I heard that if you run 4" or larger PVC on the legs that they can't climb it. Any one had any success with this?

Years ago I helped my brother trap them and we'd mix honey and oatmeal in a small plastic bowl. Works real good.

Just put it on a few weeks ago, and so far so good. No raccoons, or squirrels in my feeder since. This is as close at they get. This is only 2.5 inch PVC.

If you use sardines, you just have to watch out for any feral cats and what not, as they are very attracted to them also.
For the record they do work well though.

Take a can of mackrell, put it in an old dishwashing detergent bottle and set it outside in the sun for a few days. The resulting nastiness will call anything within a half mile. Just squirt in your trap, doesnt take much to bait a trap. I had very good sucess with it when I had chickens. Varmints were thinning my coop untill I trapped them out.

Did you take my advice on the pvc pipe over the legs?
