One week from today, headed west to Colorado for public land archery elk. I am soooo STOKED! It's been close to the top of my "bucket list" for a long time. Got the ATV all tuned up, tent and gear ready. Just waiting & waiting & waiting

OKAY, I'm back. Did not take a shot but saw numerous elk (and bears). While I was there, it was very dry. I was told "if you want to find elk, find water". Most of the elk were at slightly lower elevations, in the oak brush. First the acorn crop is very good and some of the creeks had decent water holes. Here are the coordinates to where I camped, N38*18.154', W108*04.430 . Here are the coordinates to where I saw quite a few elk, N38*18.897', W108*01.818 . The elk I found were several miles in (on foot). The elevation change is dramatic for a "fat, old" guy. All that being said, we finally got some rain a couple of days before I left and a light dusting of snow, once. By the 2nd season, I expect the elk will have moved, but what do I know about that? Just speculation. Incredible trip, would do it all again, exactly the same. Yes disappointed that I did not harvest a bull (had an either/or tag, but chose not to shoot a cow), but if you can't enjoy that area and just "being there"... probably need to find another hobby.

Unit 62?
How crowded was the area with other hunters? I was looking at doing my first elk hunt in unit 62. Was this an OTC tag? But I was thinking about doing a pronghorn hunt next year in Wyoming and building preference points in Colorado. Probably doing an Elk OTC tag the year after, then hopefully have enough preference points to get into another unit.

I'm heading out Tuesday morning for Unit 61. Heard there's been lots of rain and it's calling for snow this weekend.

Good luck. Hope there is a little snow when you get there so you can trail one up. Looks like a little warmer for next week. Might get sloppy though.

Sorry I haven't responded sooner. I was hunting at Kickapoo cavern SP. I hunted unit #62. There were a good number of hunters there, but it is a BIG area. It was fairly easy to find an area away from too many others by being willing to hike a ways. It was warm and dry while I was there, with rain (slight snow/sleet mix) finally coming in the day before I left. The cooler/wetter weather may possibly trigger migration movement to winter areas. Who knows? GOOD LUCK!
