Well another deer season is upon us. Every season it seems I have the downer attitude. I don't wanna do that, it's not worth messing with etc when it comes to getting ready for deer hunting.

Every season I still try. I still can not for the life of me figure out why I keep doing it. There are others that do not hunt and they seem to be ok.

I am not sure why I keep doing this year after year. Maybe it's the thought of the possibility of taking a huge buck? Everything about this comes full force around dove season, imo.

The air is crisp so fall is around the corner. I'm looking to deep as to why I love this so much but maybe that's what keeps me pulling it even more. I am trying to find the answer yr after yr. God forbid if I ever give it up.

If you have to ask why, then maybe it is time to hang up the camo and look for another hobby, and just sit on the couch and watch football.
Only way I would quit is I wouldn't be able to crawl.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I am the exact opposite. I count down the days to colder weather, earlier mornings and waiting to see what the next hunt brings. By the time August gets here, 85% of my daily energy is spent thinking or talking about hunting. By the time September hits, or God forbid an early cold front hits, it is probably close to 90%.

I love checking my cameras, tweaking the bow blinds, planning out new routes, looking for things I may have missed the year before, looking at old pictures to see if I recognize any deer from the past, listening to stories from others, making extra time to practice, getting the kids out in the woods, etc. I enjoy it all and get antsy as it gets closer.

I dread the day that I don't look forward to it and will find a new hobby when that day comes. I invest too much money, time and energy into this one for it not to be exciting.

I hope you find what makes you happy or can figure out what you used to love about it cheers

There are only two seasons in a year. Deer season and getting ready for deer season.

My Dad was an avid hunter all his life until he reached his 60's. He stayed on a lease but quit shooting deer with a gun and went to a camera. After a few years quit going out at all.

I am not 65 and keep wondering if I too will lose the desire. So far ................ NOT!

I think I will always enjoy watching the sun come up with a rifle beside me, or slung over my shoulder. But I ain't huggin' no trees.

I’ve quit a time or two and not hunted over the years. Bad leases, divorce, bass tournaments and driving a race car have gotten in the way a time or two. I’m back hunting again in full force and won’t quit this time until I get to old.

Thanks, Billy

This will be my 38th year in a blind and I may be more rabid for it now than ever. I love it and don't plan to stop anytime soon.

7mag, if you don't enjoy it, then stop doing it. Life is too short. I never have a downer attitude towards even the most mundane of chores that have to be done when it revolves around the ranch or the cabin. I look forward to the work weekends and wish my schedule would allow more work weekends! It's an expensive hobby, and if you don't enjoy it thoroughly, take a year or two off, or find another hobby altogether. Best of Luck!!

Maybe you need to change hunting area/leases with better animals or maybe you're bored with a certain style of hunting? I'd recommend bow hunting if all you've ever done is rifle hunt. It'll give you an entirely different perspective up

I love deer hunting, but I mainly do it because of my Dad. We live about two hours apart, so we don't hang out much. It's pretty much the only thing we do together besides go fishing a few times a year.

After a 12 yr hiatus I have gotten back into archery hunting in the past 4 yrs now. I also really enjoying taking photos of wildlife when I am rifle hunting. I still get excited about hunting season every year now at 62. Since I am able to hunt almost everyday now, the excitement of opening morning is not the same as it was 50 yrs ago. But I still enjoy every minute of every single hunt I make.

I just love being outdoors. Killing something is secondary. It used to be different when I was young. Just had to kill something back then. Cold air, smell of wood smoke, the holidays, it's just been a ritual every year for the past 40 or so.

So let me elaborate as some of you misconstrued my post. I still enjoy the thrill of the hunt and as of yet have really not tired of it. The downer part is knowing or expecting a less then average yr. The rest I am ok with. I don't need any other hobbies etc

So here is what I have done or tried as far as field related to this sport. Avid rifle hunter for many yrs. With that stated though I took up bow hunting about 13 yrs ago. For the most part I only bowhunt. Last yr I also took up the recurve bow to add another challenge to the game.

I have 3 muzzleloaders that I have yet to try. I need to do that to get the feel of smoked venison. I have an interest in handgun hunting and may consider that at some point. Someone mentioned physical ability and getting out. That's a major player for me. I just can't do what I use to when I was younger and my body was healthier. That is what ticks me off each yr more so knowing I am not getting any younger.

My back neighbor in Gillespie county always got his deer. Every year. He died at around 98. Towards the end, he had a feeder set up by his house and he'd nail them from his bathroom window. banana (Square heads rofl)

What makes it easier for me to go out now is my wife loves hunting as much if not more than I do. She has really good eye sight and can see through a thin rock and a really good judge of deer age as well.

Because of various reasons.. mainly working 6-7 days a week w a stay at home wife raising 2 kids

I gave hunting up for about 9-10 years.

About 3 years ago it was finally my time again.

I can't wait for it all year

I always loved it but that time away made me appreciate it even more

I tell my wife every year that November is my month and she lets me be. It's the one month I dont have to worry about being anywhere but the stand

I still enjoy the woods but like most things, it will change over time.

Our deer camp experience went away about 4 years ago. Family issues, you know the story.

About the same time, I really ramped up my out of state hunting, so that took some time away from deer hunting.

Got remarried with 3 new kids 3 years ago so Ieased a place close so the kids could hunt, the last 3 seasons have been about getting them deer, and we had a blast.

Something is changing in me. Just got back from 8 days in Arizona. Great trip, awesome country. I was excited to go, but I didn’t really feel the burning desire to hunt. We hunted hard and I enjoyed a stalk on a big black bear thst I really wanted, but the rest of the trip I was content to be in the woods looking around not doing much. And by day 6 I was ready to be back home. Maybe it was the lack of game we were seeing, I don’t know. Missed the opening day of dove for the first time in 15 years and didn’t miss it a bit. I used to live for opening day of dove season.

I’m looking forward to mule deer season but I’m cancelling Colorado because I want to be here for my daughters 5th birthday. And the thought of not going is fine with me.

I just don’t have the fire to hunt like I used too. I still get excited about hunting new animals (pumped to to go Africa ) and can’t wait to get in a bow blind, but it’s nothing like it once was. I had to come to grips with it this week. I spend most of my work week on ranches so I get plenty of rural therapy, which is vital to me. But actually hunting....not so much of a priority as it once was. A morning here or an evening there is fine as far as time spent hunting deer goes.

Not throwing in the towel by Any stretch, but it’s odd to admit to yourself that you don’t love your passion as much as you once did.

Maybe I’m just in a weird mood because I am ragged out from the trip home but it’s how how I’ve been feeling. Maybe I'm catching a slight case of burn-out. I've hunted quite a bit during my adult life and have been blessed to take not only a good amount of animals but also a variety of them. I did catch myself wondering "what am I doing out here"? this past trip. Its a weird thing I'm battling with.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think all that is perfectly normal. There are as many reasons one hunts as there are hunters.

Some hunters keep the same mindset basically their entire lives, while most of us change our attitudes towards hunting and the outdoors as we age, change our attitudes towards life in general, and as life changes around us.

We all have a story. Mine is similar to yours. I used to be hyper-focused on killing but now I’m learning to slow down and enjoy all that comes along with the entire experience - the planning, the comraderie, and just enjoying God’s beautiful creation. I’m still serious and I’m still hunting hard for what I’m after, but I’m also enjoying the experiences more with my eyes/mind open wider on the journey. It’s like viewing a painting of a beautiful hunting scene with the hunter a small part of the overall picture - I’m trying more and more to not simply be the hunter in the scene, but see the entire scene from the viewpoint of someone viewing the painting.

As I reflect more about this, I think that, for me, that goes a long way towards explaining my disdain for HF, score threads, hunting shows, long-range shooting and everything else that goes along with the “horn porn”/“just kill it” craze that has come to dominate hunting over the past 30 years. It just saddens me that so many seem to have blinders on to all the deeper and ultimately more satisfying things that hunting has to offer.

Faulkner wrote a story in “The Big Woods” about a hunter who chased a ghost buck of legend through the swamps for years, one year actually caught up to him after a helluva chase, raised his rifle, and simply mouthed “Bang” in the brief seconds the buck was in his sights. I understood it.

I think it was also Faulkner who said “What every man really hunts for - is himself.” I’m coming to understand that too - more and more with each passing year.

I don't know. I have always loved hunting always been excited about it begged and pleaded with my dad to take us hunting/fishing more and that we didn't want to play baseball/basketball/football etc.

My boy and my brothers kids have taken after us as well and enjoy hunting. I love hunting no matter what, but nothing beats hunting with my brother and my dad. We still sit together on occasion... it can be a little hard on the nose after a dinner of tamales and chili and then the coffee gets things churning in the morning but wouldn't have it any other way.

What a beautiful picture of red smoke you painted in my mind. Right along with smellavision as I know that smell, too.

Deer hunting has changed a lot for me. The most exciting was as a boy hunting any legal deer with an open sighted model 94 Winchester 30-30, and learning how to kill them. Over the years I went through various phases. After the 30-30 I chased the perfect deer rifle. Then I hunted with pistols. Then bows. First a recurve, then tricked out compounds, then back to the recurve. Then I went back to rifles and shot deer from long range. The blood lust is more than quenched. I've been fortunate to take many really big fair chase DIY bucks. I now get a bigger kick out of watching the youngsters. The deer I like to shoot these days are either a nice fat doe for the table or hunt and kill one particular mature buck. It still scratches the primal pulse quickening predatory instinct that so much in modern society tries to repress. Most times though, nowadays I just watch and enjoy.
