I’m considering which route to go for a crossbow. Specifically, I’m wondering if it’s worth the savings to buy a slightly used one and replace the string or buy a new one which really only saves by having a new string and having a warranty.
Is the warranty worth it? How much does a new string run, etc?

I understand the economics of one vs the other but what’s your experience? For example, would you buy a brand new Mission or one that’s a couple of years old that has no warranty and needs new string but it’s $400 cheaper??

Cheap, has been dependable for the price and get some heavier bolts for it like the Carbon Experss pile drivers and run a 125gr head, have seen groups of 2 inches at 40 yards.

If $ were not a consideration I would go Ten Point, they have been doing crossbow for years and have it figured out. Really like the balance of their reverse limb bows.

I have a Parker that is 10 years or so old still going put its third set of strings on it 4year before last.

Centerpoint like a lot of the bows has a 5 year warranty for the original purchaser. Ten Point, Mission and Parker are lifetime warranty bows for the original purchaser.

See you are in North East Dallas, go see David or Mariah at Cabela's in Allen and try out a few. they do the warranty work on bows that are brought back there for it and I know who trained them.

Steve and Josh at Outdoor Proshop in Garland has some Mission crossbows as well.

Cost of strings and cables vary depending on the brand of bow. You can search the bow model and make for string and cable set and find the price easily enough. o install thestrings and time the bow it depends on the shop.

Used Ten Point has been great.

I have an Excalibur and really like it.

Had an Excalibur--simple, but wide. Moved to a Mission (Mathews) and love it. 19" wide and 6.5 pounds with 365 FPS. Pricey, but worth it.

Seems like you really pay for the FPS...400+ around a grand. I’m looking too but trying to stay ready to shoot at $600-700. New or year old, still trying to compare pros cons but seem endless.

Excalibur is my go to. Ive had a couple different brands and by far enjoy my micro 335 and micro 355 the best.

I remember when straight round wheels on a compound bow killed them just fine. You get a crossbow that can shoot upper 200's FPS (much less mid 300's) and dial it in, you have a rig perfectly capable of getting the job done. If you put a Yeti sticker on it, you'll get another 50 FPS.

I have an Excalibur Matrix and love it. It shoots so good that I make sure not to shoot the same target spot twice as I have messed up a couple arrows. I also like that I can change the string anywhere, anytime. It is also very easy to unload as you can use your cocking string to release the bow. It also has a lifetime warranty. The only draw backs are it is wide and slightly louder than other brands.

The heavier bolts really do ok in the sniper 370? I cant remember what bolts I went with but I think with the 100gr field points It came out to around 400gr. Its a tack driver at 20- 30 yards but move back to 40 and its all over the place.

edit: Now that I think about it, I think it was 425 gr or more. Guess I need to check when I get home.

Loved my Excalibur because of accuracy and simplicity, but not the wide limbs. Moved to a Mission MXB 360 and love the lighter weight and less noise.

I’ve got a centerpoint 370 sniper that I’ll sell you. Been shot less than 30 times. Have bolts, broadheads, and a bushnell trs-25 red dot

i have a Barnett ghost 410 on the market for $500. Good bow for the money.

The popular ones are Ten Point, Excalibur and Parker in the sub $1k price range. There are others that are under $400 but for the money, the Sniper 370 is hard to beat. I have 4 xbows and the Sniper is one of them. It does shoot great and there's a HUGE following online with them. They're very popular and I'm sure will be around for a good while which is good when it comes to parts, strings, etc. Do your research and see what others are saying. Most every brand has it's ups and downs, just keep that in mind. Find something that 'fits' you good, shoulders good, ok on weight. And better yet, try shooting one a couple times if they'll let you. I bought a Ten Point Warrior, put it together, waxed the strings and sighted it in out to 50 yards where I could easily keep my arrows on a dollar bill at that distance. To me the biggest plus is not having to hunt from a tree though careful movement is important to keep from being noticed.

Retired with limited extra cash. Damaged my shoulder 3 years ago and couldn't draw my compound. Checked reviews and best performance and price was Barnett Jackal. Paid about 175.00 from Walmart and have taken 4 deer all were pass through at 25 to 30 yds, None ran more than 75 yds. A great product. Also purchased a center point for my wife at a cost o 225.00 a;so outstanding product super fast at 350' per sec and very accurate at 20 to 40 yds. She has now bagged 2 nice bucks with it!!!!!
