Killed about 50 hogs with a 8.5" 300 Blackout SBR...seems to work just fine on putting them down under 200 yards. Most drop immediately, a few make it 25 yards or so. The occasional big hog shot in the gut will require a follow up shot or two. The most important thing to me is compact size with my suppressor and thermal so that is why I went 300 BO.
I would go 6.8 if you are running a 16" barrel. Yep, i haven't shot any out to 200 yards but all ive shot have dropped like a sack of potatoes. I run the FLIR PTS233 which is very compact along with 8" SBR its perfect little package. It'll smoke em all large or small.

I have two guns a LAR-8 which is a 308 on a AR platform, and a LAR 6.8 on a AR platform. The power of the 308 is great to have on big boars, but the gun jumps and takes a bit to aim and pull off another round. I clean this gun after 20-30 rounds to make sure I do not have jams from all the carbon. The 6.8 does not have near the power but you can get off many rounds quick and double tap if you practice. I clean this gun after about 100 rounds. Your choice they are both good, but I guarantee you anytime I find a big boar I have the 308.

I’m not sure why the Grendel don’t get more attention. I think it’s the name. Well, a 16” 6.8 outperforms a 16” Grendel at typical pig hunting ranges (sub 200 yards) and has better factory ammo availability. I imagine this is why most people are recommending the 6.8 for this purpose. Nothing wrong with a 6.5 G, though. This BS has been bandied about too much! The 6.8 is just as good as the Grendel up to 200 yards and loses out after. The Grendel can run heavier bullets with better BC's at usable velocities. My 16" Grendel gives velocities similar to the 6.8 with the same length barrel and there is a greater variety of factory ammo out there for it.

I have to disagree about factory ammo for the Grendel. My buddy has been looking for 2 months for Factory SST or Fusion. Not is stock anywhere. I texted him yesterday because MidwayUSA finally has them in stock. He made the comment that 6.8 hunting ammo is everywhere and began to regret buying a Grendel. He is happy now because the ammo is on the way.

The problem presently is the Grendel is getting truly popular faster than ammo companies expected. I usually order online using Ammoseek. I have noticed that by far the most common factory load for the 6.8 is a full metal jacket, hunting ammo is slim pickings even on Ammoseek.

Then again I load my own and my rifles never go hungry! What I really mean to say overall there is no noticable difference in the two cartridges performance until distance gets over 200 yards. I don't expect to intentionally look for shot that long when carrying either a Grendel or the 6.8. They are both nice rounds that make the AR platform into acceptable medium range hunting rifles. I had both and sold my 6.8 parts simply due to the Grendels capability of using a wider range of available bullets.

My 16" Grendel gives velocities similar to the 6.8 with the same length barrel and there is a greater variety of factory ammo out there for it. It is factually correct that the 6.8 carries more energy than the Grendel at typical hunting ranges (sub 200) when using the same barrel lengths. You may not think it is a big enough difference to matter, but that’s your OPINION. Nothing I said in my post is “BS,” bud. I am simply sticking with what the numbers say. Pretty silly of you to try and call me out like that based on your opinion alone, when the numbers (Kenetic energy, velocity, etc) support what I said 100%. That’s what I call BS. You don’t have to agree with me, but don’t call a statement that is objectively true BS. The 6.8 is not “just as good” as the Grendel up to 200 yards; it is objectively BETTER (energy-wise). Is it slightly better or significantly better? That is an opinion that is open for debate. And if you are seriously trying to argue that factory ammo availability is better for the Grendel than the 6.8 I simply don’t know what to say. You’re just plain wrong on that one lol. Go to a few stores and compare how much 6.8 is on the shelf vs. 6.5 G. You’ll see.
