Has anyone hunted any of the youth hunts here? It is 10 minutes from my ranch, we are pending 2nd draw now but those chances are slim. I am thinking about showing up as a standby if they have any available, if they dont get drawn as a standby we can still hunt at my ranch. Any experiences?

If you're that close try for standby. Hunt is a freezer filler and you won't be shooting up your ranch...

Historically south llano does not take standbys. It's a shame because everyone hunts near the river and it leaves thousands of acres unhunted

It says no standbys available on the "Gun Deer Antlerless/Spike" but on the "Youth Only Gun Deer Either Sex" it says standbys may be available. I am going to stop by there Friday when I am heading to our ranch and see if I can talk to someone.

SLRSP is a tiny SP, only a couple hundred acres as I recall, which is why they only have 4 or 5 blinds. It is primarily a camping & play in the river destination...a mini Garner type Park.
OTOH Walter Buck WMA's property adjoins the back (East) fenceline, and was the 1st Lottery Hunt I drew ummm back in the mid '90's, but has not been offered in the Lottery in over 20 years. I suspect WBWMA might be a couple thousand acres but it is a verrrry rugged piece of ground and the super steep jeep trails that pass for access roads into the back country are slick as greased owl poop in a heavy dew. SLRSP is 2600 Acres, for the youth hunt they have 16 permits this year. I am pretty familiar with the park, we kayak and fish there sometimes. We see a ton of deer when we are there, my daughter is particularly interested in an axis buck, its about the only thing she has not harvested yet.
From the TPWD Website " History
South Llano River State Park is south of Junction in Kimble County. The 2,600-acre site, adjacent to the South Llano River, was donated to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1977 and was opened to the public in 1990.
Because of his love and respect for the land, Walter Buck donated his ranch to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department."

Sounds like the Walter Buck WMA has been incorporated into the SP...that makes sense, as they were being managed out of the same HQ.
Coming out of the WBWMA temp trailer HQ area, next to the screen enclosed skinning "shed" about 10:30 'ish, as I approached the Low Water Crossing , with my new to me halogen hi beams on High in the '91 Suburban, I noticed some stragglers of a mixed WT & Axis herd beginning to string at a high trot across the Crossing on the east bank of the river...that became a solid herd that looked like the Africa films from the '50's and lost count at over 75 animals in the 1st few minutes. The main body of the herd took more than 10-15 minutes to pass at a dead run on the digital dash clock...never seen anything like that before or since...and was the last time I've been able to get drawn for SLRSP. My group of 4 got picked for south llano river a few years ago. I think we shot about 17 deer. About 14 axis and the rest whitetails plus a few hogs. The place is unbelievable. My best friend drew the best blind on the river and he shot 6 axis including a 30 inch trophy that he mounted. If you want lots of axis or deer then shoot your deer and keep hunting. Don't walk over and recover it and scare everything off. If you shoot and stay put then they will come back in no time and you can keep filling the freezer
