Recently decided to use my 12 ga beretta on hogs. Anyone here use Federal Flight Control? Some pretty impressive field tests are out there.

I've used that wad in their Heavyweight turkey loads-- and it out performed other similar loads for pattern density at 40 yards.

Found these in 2-3/4". No 3" on the shelf. I'll try them. Seems like the 2-3/4 actually has more velocity. For 30 yards in these should be just as good?

#3 steel? Will that penetrate as well as #4 buck?

No it will not. Lead has a higher density than steel and will penetrate deeper, given all other variables are equal. Therefore it especially won't penetrate as deep bc #4buck is bigger than any bird shot including #3 steel. .
Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

I feel that #4 buck is just about as small as I would use on hogs and didn't know if steel had some majical properties I didn't know about.

Cutting up some hog legs yesterday, and found some lead shot barely into the meat. After I skinned the hind legs, I saw some dark spots and digging them out, found what I would guess to be about some #2 shot. It got through the skin and at the most 1/8" or so into the meat.
Talking with a state trapper once that I had doing some beaver control, he was telling me how many beavers he had seen with shot under their skin. If you are going for hogs with one, I would opt for the largest shot you could use or slugs....in order to get enough penetration to do some good, and the closer to the animal the better.

I'll be using 00 buck, in 2-3/4" There were none available in 3". My question was a comparison of 2-3/4" vs 3". Found these in 2-3/4". No 3" on the shelf. I'll try them. Seems like the 2-3/4 actually has more velocity. For 30 yards in these should be just as good?

Oops missed your point. My shotgun I use for buckshot has a turkey full choke tube on it with a .660 inside diameter, Primos tightewad I think. I tested all kinds of chokes and this one put in the best patterns with virtually all the buckshot on a paper plate at 30 yards. People will say use an open choke but I spent some bucks testing this theory and on both my 12 gauges open chokes meant open patterns. Tight patterns and shooting at the head/neck area are what you need. If I could regularly find it I would use #1 buck.

Standard 9 Pellet 2.75 inch 00buck generally has more velocity and equates to more foot pounds of energy per Pellet. If you can consistently put 9 standard 2.75 “ 00bk in your target at any given distance, you woul need to put 10 in the target using 2.75 Magnum or 3 “ Magnum 00 bk shells.
I once tested 20 Remington 870P shotguns with consecutive serial #s, all with the same cylinder choke. Using the same brand of 9 Pellet 2.75 “ 00bk at 30 yds. The patterns ranged in size from all 9 pellets in a pattern the size of a 9” dinner plate to a 30” spread.. Most were some where in between. Many times changing the brand made significant changes to the results both good and bad. Testing is the only way to find out!

I harvested a 100lb. sow while turkey hunting this year. Square in the face at 15yds. with 2.5 oz. of #9 TSS. She dropped in her tracks and never moved.

The wad doesn't flare out and peel back, but stays in tact keeping the load together. If shot through a tight choke, it will deform the wad making it ineffective. So I'm hearing. I'll shoot it this weekend. as your test with Federal Fight Control?

Interesting, no I haven't tried the flight control loads though I have some Federal buckshot. Must be older stuff as it says granulated filler 2 3/4 20 #1 buck. This is an awesome buckshot round that is hard to find anymore. If you get good results I will get some to try.

A member gave me a heads up on this stuff. There are some great youtube videos with good field tests you can look at. I'll shoot some this weekend, if not on a hog I'll pattern it on paper.

One thing I noticed in my testing was that different loads didn't always shoot to the same elevation. One shotgun has irons on it and the other two beads so it was pretty easy to get a good sight picture.

I'm a believer. That's a 30 yard pattern, all 9. The smaller, lower hits were shots from another shooter. The pic is rotated, pattern is actually high. This was 2-3/4", IC choke. This hog was 33 paces. Fell over like he was hit by a truck. I didn't cut him up and dig around for a wound channel, didn't get the pic until the next day and he was pretty ripe. BIL was right, 2-3/4" is plenty of load.

Thanks. Kind of hard to believe he stepped out like he did, I was on my ATV. It was like the sound of the ATV held him in place, sorta' froze up. I had a little cover, got off and left it running and closed to about 35 on foot. I didn't mention, this Flight Control was the Personal Defense load, only 1150 fps. I have ordered the Flight Control in Vital Shock, 1350 fps. Should work even better. 3" won't be necessary.

The only reason to get the longer shells would be for using steel shot on bigger ducks and geese. Where I hunt pigs you never see one standing in the daytime no matter what the circumstances, too well trained about humans and their machines.

We have very little hunting pressure on them this time of the year. There are ranch workers that use ATV's that don't shoot at them, so they get a little relaxed. I'll be using these loads on a long walk through the creek bottom. They are thick in there. The only reason to get the longer shells would be for using steel shot on bigger ducks and geese. Where I hunt pigs you never see one standing in the daytime no matter what the circumstances, too well trained about humans and their machines.
