ITS RAINING IN MCKINNEY SO I AM CLEANING GUNS. I HAVE SEVERAL RUGER M77 TANG SAFTEY RIFLES THAT I HUNT WITH EVERY YEAR, HOWEVER ABOUT 2 YRS AGO I BOUGHT A RUGER M77 HAWKEYE (NIB) THAT I NEVER TOOK OUT OF THE BOX; NEVER EVEN PUT THE BOLT IN IT. I GOT A HECK OF A DEAL ON IT TODAY I DECIDED TO TAKE A LOOK AND I AM VERY UN-HAPPY WITH THE FINISH AND THE BOLT! THE ACTION IS NOT SMOOTH AND THE BOLT HAS A WEIRD FINISH TO IT. WTF! RUGER? THIS ONE MIGHT COME UP FOR SALE! GIVE ME MY OLD TANG SAFETY ANYDAY OVER THIS P.O.S.! ANYONE ELSE HAVE A HAWKEYE THAT THEY ARE HAPPY WITH AND DO YOU OR DID YOU EVER OWN A RUGER WITH THE TANG SAFETY?

OK....I will go $300 on it!! I have not owned or shot a Hawkeye yet, but I do like the slim feel to the stock! I saw one in 264 Win Mag the other day at a gun shop, and it almost made the trip home with me! I have owned quite a few of the tang's and Mk-II's! I like the tang guns much better, but currently only have one left (flat bolt 308)! In my opinion Ruger started going down hill after Mr. Ruger died! I think they still build a solid rifle, but they just dont have the same visual, or feel appeal they used too!

That 308 will be with me for awhile!! It took me forever to find a clean one at a reasonable price!

I generally love Ruger bolt action rifles. But, I have no experience with the Hawkeye model. It is sad when a great American gun maker goes downhill.
God is so good to me.

Its not just you man, i got a hawkeye 22-250 and the action is very rough. i thought it just needed a good cleaning and and it would smooth up...didnt happen, its still rough.
its in excellent shape, its black synthetic and stainless and i gave 425 for it with a scope and sling so i figure i got a pretty good deal....all in all its a good gun just not as good as my .243 i once had....it was tang and i wish i still had it.

Are yall unhappy with the Three position saftey? If so I have a great story behind that.
My friend just got his gun and had barely shot it enough to sight it in decided to take it deer hunting down in Hico. He has never killed a deer and within thirty mins of sitting in the stand a spike walks up so he decides to take him. He gets his gun out of the window and gets ready to shoot, takes if off safe, and squeezes on the trigger but nothing happened. He turned to me and his eyes looked like Half Dollars! Then he said "It wont go!!!" In the end the deer ended up running off and after i looked at the gun i noticed he had it in the second position and not all the way off. He still gets grief today about it, when something happens all of us start saying " It wont go dude it wont go" Thanks for reading my pointless story.

Is that shooting after consuming large amounts of beer?

as a person who thinks that ruger makes( should i say "made")one of the best rifles in history, i have to agree that the hawkeye is second rate. the matte finish, dull stock and dull bolt do nothing for me. i have owned a few rugers, one a m77 mark II and one an old m77 with the tang safety. got rid of the tang safety, but my mkII is one of the finest shooting rifles i've ever pulled the trigger on. had to bed the action and do a bit of work on the trigger, but its a hunting rifle to say the least, and will shoot straight as far as I can comfortably shoot.
hopefully they will wise up and bring back the mark II soon, i know as long as they have the hawkeye as their only bolt action centerfire choice i will never own one. Thank god they haven't messed with the model 1
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

All my rugers have a crisp #2.5 trigger pull
I bought a 25-06 on here with a Heavy BBL and that damn trigger was set around 8 pounds
Brought her down to 2.5 and she is smoking now

when i got the rifle, it shot as good as a 13 year old could shoot. few years later, had some money burning a hole in my pocket, and did the work.
now its not only a joy to carry, but will shoot better than rifles twice its cost
more than a few times i've shot the heads of nails driven into fence posts around 100 yards away during practice
