I shot a .25-06 for many years and then bought a 6.5x55 which took over as my number one. Both are great Texas calibers.
Where do you shoot. I am not too far from you and we could possibly get together if you want to do a side by side shoot of them.

25-06 ammo is the most expensive of all the calibers I own. 30-30 is the cheapest with .270 in between the two.

Either is good but you already know everyone has Creedmoor fever so I expect that is what you will hear.

Yeah, let's only go to 400 yards with it, and the 25-06 is a long action. Compare long action to long action, and there are plenty of cartridges that keep the 25-06 as a loser. Dumb title for that article.

He should have used a 6.5-06 or 6.5-284 for a fair comparison.
25-06 is w solid hunting round but I wouldn't target shoot with it.

Straight up fair would be 25-06 vs 6.5-06. It blows me away that no one has standardized the 6.5-06. With a 140-150g bullet I would think it would out perform the 25-06 as well as the 270 Winchester. On another note Remington not supporting their own cartridges such as the .260 and .280 is a major wtf. Should they have marketed them as the 6.5-08 and 7-06? Would people have paid attention then? In My Opinion the 280 should be what the 270 always has been.

6.5-284 norma (long action version) has identical case capacity to the 6.5-06 but is standardized although not overly popular with most rifle manufacturers.

I've only killed 3 animals (deer & hogs) with it but nothing has take a step. I've used 115 Nosler Ballistic Tips & the now discontinued 120 Hornady Interlock HP. It's an effective killer and the 25-06 would give you a little more range.

It's mainstream now and it will be a standard loading is all short action rifles along with the 308 & 243.

It would be interesting to see what the Creedmoor has done to new sales of the .308, .243 and 7mm-08.

I think it's eating in to all three but it's really going to hurt the 7mm-08. Bergara doesn't even offer a 7mm-08.

Of course Remington screwed the pooch with the cartridge, neutering it with light weight bullets. Handloaders know how to make the 7mm-08 shine. My bet is the 6.5 Creedmoor is cutting into .243 sales the most, and .308 sales as a tight second.

Dumb title for that article. For a hunting oriented comparison going to 400 sure makes a lot of sense to me. I couldn't care less between long and short action, who really cares.

One has far more fuel available. The long action cartridge compared to a short action cartridge is not a proper scientific analysis. As was said, compare a 25-06 to a 6.5-06, 6.5-284 or a 284 Win, or a 280 Rem, or a 280 Rem A.I. and it loses against all of them.

Nobody asked for a proper scientific analysis. Whats better for 400 yards and in hunting a 6.5 creed or a 25-06. His opinion was 25-06.
If the question was different good chance the answer would be too.

Scott I've be leaning more to 25 but not sure the 6.5 may fade way no telling UT would like to hear more on the 25 06 Have/had both. Killed a lot more with the 25-06 but creed is quickly catching up. After I picked up a 257 weatherby the 06 sat idle. First creed was a rebarreled shot out 243. Now have 3 creeds. Don’t ever see it fading away. My 2 cents if you get at 25-06 get a 26” barrel. If you want to run a short platform then the creed is less effected by barrel length and It’s already a short action. You can run a creed as a lot shorter overall length/package then a 25-06 with minimal performance loss. If you want a true comparison(barrel length, action, powder capacity ) the 6.5-284 is a better head to head with the 25-06. 25-06 runs on powder capacity, creed runs on efficiency both case capacity, pressures and bullet configuration. Overall it’s comes down to either nostalgia or rifle configuration needs Buy both, it’s un-Texan not to have a quarter bore.
