At age 57 I shot actual skeet for the first time. I'm a life long bird hunter but had never shot on an actual clays range. My 19 year old son was in from college and on his suggestion, since I had just got a new bird gun,we went and shot skeet for the first time. We did not do very well but I got to get the feel of my new 20 guage and it was a lot of fun. We shot 4 rounds. My son shot his old 12 guage OU and shot 16, 17, 16, 18. I shot 16, 16, 18, 18. We obviously didn't have a clue about the game and were the only shooters I saw that did not shoulder their shotgun before calling pull. We also had our shotguns choked like we bird hunt, with full over imp cyl. and I don't think we had a shot over 25 yards. Station 8 is a bitch. What a fun game! It looks like in a few trips you should be able to get on them a little bit better. So how do you guys choke for skeet and how many hits out of 25 do we need to shoot a respectable round as novices? I was surprised by my reaction, but there is something about watching that little clay disk explode to dust that fired me up! Those are very respectable scores. Its what I shoot on average. 16 to 18 is average for me, 15 and below I'm cussing a bit. Over 18 and 20+ I'm felling it. I have shot 24 a few times, never 25. And I always shoot with my gun down, I shoot better that way. It is more instinctive. If I say pull with gun mounted, the barrel becomes a distraction for me. I have tired both ways. Both eyes can focus and lock on target much better with gun down, then shoulder gun and pull trigger, I do better when I pull trigger right when gun hits my face.

kman2017-What is I skeet? By the way Jersey Village is just down the road from Hot Wells. I may run into you if you shoot there. I enjoy the place, but the coke machine takes my money every time I go.
buckys-I try not to overthink it, but I may be doing as you suggest anyway. I just square up on the center of the field, except at 8, then turn back about 2/3 of the way to the thrower and call for the target so the swing is right in the wheel house. After that I just use a motion mount and try to shoot it. Last time out one of the other shooters scotch doubled on #1. I liked that. Probably not kosher in skeet, but it sure is fun. I shot too quick the first round and shot a true double, but I got the scotch double the next three rounds. Had to ease up a smidge and ride the target a split second, to break it just before center, and it's a two for one. Young man pulling said by rule "only the first target counts" and my score reflected that. My reply was "killjoy". Made me smile anyway.

Guy, most of the guys I've met shooting skeet are not bird hunters and shoot in a league. Some are very good. It would be fun to put together a team of bird hunters that all shoot low gun. No way we win, but more than likely we would be sharp when September rolled around.

I enjoy the place, but the coke machine takes my money every time I go. International skeet- what is shot in the Olympics. Targets are faster, have a 0-3 sec random delay after you call pull, gun has to be in low ready and can't move until target is thrown, and you shoot a double at every station. I typically don't go to hotwells, they don't have anything I don't have setup at my family's ranch, we have a full spec sheet field with briley throwers. My dad is trying to get me to join a league with him down there though.

kman, nobody throws International skeet targets in the area, Dalla Gun Club can but they rarely do. Colorado Springs is about the closest venue. Briley does not manufacture or sell target throwers, Jess concentrated only on shotguns and making them shoot better with their chokes or tube sets. In recent years they they have move into other firearms.

Glad to hear Hot Wells is still around, I used to go to Turkey Shoots there back in the early 80's
Sounds like you're on the right track.

Putting some skeet chokes in should get you up to around 20. That'd be respectable for a guy that's never shot skeet.

My mistake on the target throwers, they did not when I was still shooting, it’s been a while.

Your mixing a game designed with 1 miss and your out of 25 x 4 rounds with a hunting technique. Now, I realize your not competing with anyone but yourself, yet your still seeking a perfect "score" which frankly maybe 1% of the competition shooters could even pull off following your restricted technique. Think about the steps involved to a proper shot... hand placement on forearm, trigger finger out of the trigger guard, safety OFF? might as well include that... gun fitting to your shoulder and eye line, gun fitment into your shoulder. All these things are permitted in the "game" because if you miss 1 your likely out, miss two or three and you're definitely out of the money. It's a high pressure game based solely on mechanics and mental aptitude that's why most guys quit it once they find the Sporting Clays or 5 stand, just go ahead and walk on past the Trap field as well. Oh for Sporting Clays there's a whole other level of every imaginable repeatable hunting scenario you can't even begin to imagine. The best course setters for tournaments use terrain, elevation, angles of ascent and descent, off speeds hopping, running targets where the easy targets missed that literally hang in front of your face go unbroken by the best in the world to extreme frustration by all participating. The best use dble brls to have different chole options. but a solid Beretta 391 with 28 - 32" barrel, 7.5 - 9 Shot and a pocket full of chokes will get you fully addicted. Go try it, you won't waste another round on a SKEET file I promise you.

Colonel, Thanks for the comments. I'm sure I will try sporting clays after I shoot a few 25's. I have been sitting on 22 a few times when I got to 8 but haven't closed the deal yet. Now that I'm on to station 8, I should be able to get there. As far as the mount and safety goes, you are over thinking it. A solid mount is a big part of shotgunning for a bird hunter.

No, that's exactly my point, and why it's permitted in the SKEET game. I'm just saying it's almost impossible to: Call PULL - lift gun from hip insert finger into trigger deselect safety acquire target move to edge of target squeeze trigger move thru in 1.7 seconds.
If you want a true competition shooting game google FITASC Shooting.
If you ever get the chance to see Scott Robinson do some exhibition shooting at elmfork shooting range you won't believe your eyes. He can run 25 from the hip, gun over head and start at 8 and walk toward the tower hitting them from the hip as fast as they can cycle the machine.

You still missed my point, a 25 in SKEET isn't a true successful representation of anything other than perfect permitted mechanics which you're WAY over accomplishing already by not doing what's allowed - pre-mount, no safety, aligning the gun to your eye setting feet and lastly recognizing the target line then perform a repeatable lead..... Wooo Pee Doo
Strive to be in the high 90's at Sporting Clays and you have accomplished the Incredible.
In case you didn't know, 25 is just round 1, a perfect round is skeet is 100.
Denny

Not at all so. It is just something you need to groove with practice so muscle memory takes care of it.
You completely missed my point too Angus... either way it's a fun game. The shots are all easy. If you execute, you should hit them all. I've improved, but I'm not there yet. To shoot some 25's I need to raise my ability level, which is all I'm trying to do.
PS-I read about FITASC. I bet it's a ball.
