Like so many of us, I struggle knowing what duck is what. Is there a good site that goes over the various coloring and pattern details of the common ducks we get. I have looked over a lot of pictures online, but I still struggle with proper ID. Thanks!!

Take a picture and ask the THF Sound advice. Especially to avoid the game warden.

Learn each birds call. A lot of times I’ll know what they are before I see them or when it’s too early to see. Also, depending on what part of the state you’re in and what kinda water you’re hunting it’s pretty easy to narrow down what you’ll most likely be shooting. From their watching for size, shape and the way they fly, you should know what you’re shooting at.

http://www.ducks.org/hunting/waterfowl-id/As for figuring out what they are before you shoot the only way to do that is hunt often. Like seeing new model car on the road, the first time you saw it you may have had to pull up right to the bumper to read the model, but eventually when you see enough of them you'll know recognize a certain model by it's shape in the distance, etc.

No matter how much you hunt and experience you gain there are still ducks you won't be able to distinguish with 100% accuracy.
However, I feel you can narrow it down to 2 species usually. There is no way anybody can tell the difference between a ringer hen and redhead hen in flight or even on the water. The good thing is they are typically in big groups which makes it easier.
Luckily the ones you have to be careful of like Cans and Pintails which have smaller limits are easy to ID.
Then wigeon and gaddies always seem to make a lot of racket giving themselves away.

Like so many of us, I struggle knowing what duck is what. Is there a good site that goes over the various coloring and pattern details of the common ducks we get. I have looked over a lot of pictures online, but I still struggle with proper ID. Thanks!! You will never learn how to ID ducks until you start splashing them into the deeks. More times than not, you are ID’n them by their silhouette, wing beat, they way they fly in a flock, and sound. Carry this in your blind bag, shoot singles, ID each duck before you put it on the strap, pretty hard to mess up. https://www.amazon.com/Waterfowl-Identification-LeMaster-Method-Richard/dp/0811729826More times than not you will be shooting ducks you don’t need to worry about, like gaddies or teal ... but if you reach your limit on a species, like you shoot a pintail, don’t shoot another duck unless you know 100% it is not another pintail. All this will not work for early teal season. Early teal you must know 100% it’s a teal before you pull the trigger.

Shoot some ducks and learn about them.

Chad, get the Audubon field guide to North American birds and throw it in your blind bag. Good pics and species specific info to learn with your son. Then spend some time in the marsh knocking them down. You will learn to recognize the species by shape, flight patterns and wing beat, visible color patterns while in flight, vocalizations and habitat you expect to see them in. You will also learn which ones you may opt to pass on after you eat them.....

I bought the book Guy linked to. Is worth it. I hunt with guys that are way more experienced than I am, and have been hunting longer than I’ve been alive, and they are not 100% accurate on identifying ducks until they are retrieved.
It’s not easy, but it’s a skill we all need.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.
