6.5 Creedmoor H4350 - 42.0 grains 140 Berger Hybrids 10 mph variable headwind / 90 degrees 300 yards - 5 shots and I cannot explain that flyer.

When an unexplained flyer occurs, remove that piece of brass and toss it. The unexplained flyers will become less common. The shooter induced flyers will still be a fact of life. Nice shooting!

Very nice, except for the flier!!!
Do you know which shot it was? Last shot? Years ago when I shot 260 Rem, I would get a strange weird flier. I marked the case, and reloaded it and tested it again. Sure enough, that same case would cause a flier. I marked it, and used it as a fouling piece of brass. I just kept track of that piece and made sure I didn't use it.

Interesting. Back in the 80’s when I was loading and shooting for my 220 Swift heavy barrel M77, I bought loaded Norma ammo and shot it and reloaded. When I got fliers, I marked them like Jeffbird, and if it happened again I tossed them. I finally wound up with some great cases, and with Norma I got a lot of reloads out of them, and almost eliminated the fliers. But...from time to time the uhhhh sun was in my eyes...and there would be a flier.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

Tack, whats the barrel length of your rifle? What muzzle velocity are you getting with 42.0 H4350?

10 mph variable headwind / 90 degrees TackDriver, you're saying the wind was changing between a headwind and 90 degree crosswind? Either way, very nice shooting. I have a rifle that can do that. I can't.

If I weighed brass, I bet I'd find the one that would cause a flier. All my rifles have a 200 pieces of brass minimum, most have 300 to 500. Weighing brass is not another project I want to add to the mix.

I tried weighing brass for awhile and never really found it worth the time required. I completely gave it up after using the throw flier in the trash method, which does help. Some cases feel different when seating a bullet, and those I have started marking and setting aside in their own group for practice, but probably should toss those as well.

So it's voodoo. It might matter at the benchrest or F-class level of comps, but not to trying to keep 1/2 MOA. Just tossing the brass that is associated with flyers seemed to work better and way faster. Evaluating time sinks vs. results is important. Brass prep seems to consume 90% of the reloading time.

I am a guy that if it has shown me 1/4 MOA, and now it's 1/2 or 3/4 MOA, I am investigating as to why. My usual thought is that the barrel needs to be cleaned, then re-fouled.
Hornady bullets have been the easiest to consistently get to shoot. Berger VLDs have required the most attention and tweaking.

Understand, if a 1/4 MOA rifle goes to 3/4, something is wrong.
I try to avoid secant ogives when possible, so stick to Sierra Match Kings or the Berger hybrids, either of which are fairly easy to make run well. SMK's always seem to be the easiest to make run well for me and are more cost effective than Bergers.

I've told probably 100 people "If a .308 won't shoot FGGM well, there is probably something wrong with the rifle".

Thanks guys for the nice compliments.
Jeffbird / Chad : I wished I knew about " tossing the brass" that causes flyers, I am sure its within those 5 pieces of brass in that ammo box in the 2nd row, I just need to load them all up and try again and hopefully find the bad ones and toss it. Like Fireman said " I wished I knew this sooner".
Buzzsaw, its a 26 inch barrel and its 2555 fps.
garyrapp55 : HaHa, ya got me there, its actually 10 mph headwind and 90 degrees temp.
Fireman : I have 50 of those Noslers in a box, would buying them with the same lot help if I were to buy at least 200 pieces. What weight separation do you sort them? Just curious.
Thanks all.

I don't weigh brass... except for my 7mm/300 Win Mag that's for ultra long range shooting. But I had 2000 pieces of Norma brass in a bulk package, and weighed out about 100-150 pieces within .5 grains. Other than that, that's it. I'll be honest, my personal ammo is loaded good, but I'm not that anal on my own ammo.

I tend not to weigh it either, but when questions arise I'll take a look at it. I swapped into a rifle a couple of years ago and was given 80 or 100 cases with it. All are headstamped R-P, but I can discern three distinct time periods at a minimum based on the appearance of the headstamping. I found 20 grains of weight difference among these cases. While weighing cases is not as precise as volume measurement with water, I think it's a pretty safe bet that I'd get extra poor results of I used that batch of brass without weight sorting.
IMO, precision weighed powder charges are wasted when poured into brass that's not sorted for uniform volume (or at least weight).
