Has anyone ever seen an accurate distribution map for Nilgai (free range) in the state of Texas?
I know where they occur the most (along the coast from Corpus down south through Kingsville to the Laguna Atascosa)....I was just curious if anyone (such as TPWD) has ever released a distribution map.
If anyone knows of one, please post a link.

I've never seen a map, been curious about that as well. I know they are steadily moving west of 77 more and more every year, not sure if they've crossed 281 yet. Never heard of any free range sightings north of Corpus. Lots of reports coming out of the valley these days and I believe I heard of some in old Mexico.

I live down here in McAllen tx. They have moved as far as la Gloria tx which is about 38 miles west of 281. Roughly 70 miles from 77.

If anyone knows of one, please post a link. There are maps for other Exotics in Texas? Are they on TPWD's website?

They are past 281 and in Old Mexico a friend of mine was fishing near El Mesquital about 5 years ago and saw some nilgai cows. That place is about 50 miles south of the river. I've also heard about a few south of the colombia bridge. Those escaped form a high fence ranch.

There was at least one a few years back north of the Nueces River in La Salle county. He was seen on a helicopter survey on LF property. Never seen it from the ground or that it was killed that any one new of. Could have been more at that time but not likely.

Wade - I wasn't saying you did say that, we haven't had a map of exotics and their distribution throughout the state. I reckon I could have worded it differetly so it would not have come across as it did - didn't mean anything by it. Actually, wish we did have one to offer.

I haven't seen any maps for game distribution from TPWD. It shouldn't be too hard for TPWD to create an approximate one using harvest reports.

There have been quite a few around in the last few years, rebounded after the government killed them off due to disease concerns. I have seen many between Los Fresnos and SPI in the flats, as tough as they are I would thing they would be able to expand into most of south TX.

They said 77 was the western boundary and then it was 281. 285 was the northern boundary
I sold a Ranch just East of 281 and about 2 miles south of 285 thst bordered the mariposa thst was loaded up with them.
Have a client with a big Ranch just north of McAllen thst has none
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nilgai distribution is only limited by their access to fresh water and are considered nomadic. So conceivably they could wander just about anywhere there is water.

I hunt the Mariposa a couple times a year for them, and they are loaded! Seen several on the surrounding ranches over the years as well, especially to the North and West.
