Our spanking new Secretary of State is in Brussels. That got me to thinking. Wonder what he's having for lunch? Did they originate there? You know what I'm talking about, so I checked. Well, maybe they did... Below copied from this article Brussels sprouts have a mysterious and puzzling history. Some writers suggest they were eaten in classical times, but according to the English food writer Jane Grigson, they are first mentioned in the city of Brussels’s market regulations in 1213. This would suggest they were being grown in the Low Countries at that time. However, not until two centuries later do they appear again, this time on the menus of Burgundian wedding feasts held at the court of Lille. At that time the powerful dukes of Burgundy controlled northern France and most of the Low Countries. After this appearance on the royal table, brussels sprouts vanish again; it seems they were never a popular vegetable, or perhaps they remained a very local specialty.

I've tried growing then in my winter garden. They are too slow for me. I now buy them frozen in a light butter sauce.

I fry mine in bacon grease with onions and bacon.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Did y'all read the history? Interesting that they show up only after a long absence. It's like they had historical trouble with liking them enough for them to get wide spread.

Somebody on the forum probably eats them with grits. I doubt that, but I do know that frozen Brussel spouts are excellent slingshot ammo. Frozen peas and corn are also pretty good, but the cannon of slingshot ammo are the frozen Brussel sprouts.

This is the second Brussels sprouts thread you have started this week. I'm starting to see an unsettling pattern.

This was a history thread regarding origins. Somebody has to be responsible for educating the OT.

I like Brussels sprouts, but only cooked with a lot of garlic salt, black pepper and paprika.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

Deep fried crispy brussel sprouts are the best.

Deep fried crispy brussel sprouts are the best. I lied. I like them that way also, but we don’t have a deep fryer.
