I was leaving my property on Sunday and noticed this cedar tree all torn up. The highest scrapes/scratches were almost 6 foot high and the lowest about a foot from the ground. What animal do you think caused it? Chupacabra and black panthers already ruled out as they are not generally found in East Texas. Thanks for any insight.

There are no axis on my ranch (or black bears that I know of). I've never seen a buck rub at the six foot height so I am going with porcupine.

Porcupine as well if those are just surface scratches. A bear will leave deeper claw marks and you sometimes would find bear hair in the tree.

Not sure what part of East Texas you are in, but just because you have not seen a black bear does not mean there isn't one in your area. Maybe this is just the first sign of bear you are seeing?
You've given me an idea though... It would be funny to go onto my neighbor's property (we are good friends, so I'm pretty sure I won't get shot) and scrape the hell out of one of his cedar trees from as tall as I can reach all the way to the bottom, and make sure it is in a place where he will find it. hehe

I'm near Tyler and there have been black bear sightings in Bullard, Carthage and Gladewater. Those are all on game camera and the pictures have been posted on Facebook. A lady near Carthage also hit one with her car two years ago. From comments on FB, people seem to think that they are young boars out roaming new countryside looking for sows to breed with.
I haven't seen one, nor do I know anybody personally that has seen one, but I do have a lot of mutual friends of the people who posted game camera pictures of those bears.

Put a game camera up and see if it comes back.
