Hi there, THF. Looking for some advice as a novice hunter. A friend of my father has given us permission to hog hunt on his land. It is an awesome piece of land. About 800 acres with several hunting stands and a beautiful pond. Very gracious of him. My question is this: What are some things I can do to help improve his land or help him out with upkeep. I’m relatively new to all this but I’d like to contribute in a way that let’s him know I’m willing to do some work as a thank you. Any ideas? I know the obvious thing would be to ask but having met this guy only once I know he’d tell me not to worry about it.
Thanks.

if there are fences, volunteer to help upkeep, be watchful for things that are out of place, leave gates like you find them or ask land owner how he wants the gates kept. volunteer to help out with any chores, any time you have free time. if you see him working at something, stop, just start helping, with out asking.

You said he has several hunting stands. If there are feeders as well offer to maybe put some corn in the feeders, paint the stands, trim shooting lanes or along the roads, stuff like that.

My place is 1/10 of the size of his and I'm up to my [censored] in alligators when it comes to brush clearing, and fence building. A man can help tremendously with a chain saw and pole saw.

If he has livestock on it, buy him several sacks of feed after asking him what he feeds this time of year. If he has a feeder on his pond, pick up a bag or two of catfish feed. Tractor Supply also carries feed for bream, bass, and other fish people commonly stock in their ponds. If he owns a tractor, bring a 5 gallon container of diesel, given he has a diesel tractor. Simply put, provide him with something to help with his operating expenses, and do it every time you hunt his place.
Also, if you have special maintenance and fix-it skills, offer them when the opportunity presents itself.

Simply ask him what you can do to help...offer to fill feeders, paint stands, trim brush etc.
Ultimately he will appreciate most what he is asked what he needs done....
Sounds like an awesome deal! Good luck!

Agree with Snake. The last thing I would want is somebody/anybody doing stuff on my place without checking with me.

each visit is worth 100.00 or more Find out what he drinks and give him a bottle or 2 not just one time Leave every thing as you found it Don't ever leave anything behind, Offer him a portion of your success. Let him know when you are going and thank him after each visit. Give him an update of your success.

Don't do anything without permission, but like stated by others it seems with me that there is always an unlimited supply of brush to clear. Bring some loppers and a saw and ask what he needs done. Also suggested was buying corn, this is extremely cheap and if that is what he is feeding I would buy it without asking and just give it to him while offering to help fill feeders.

What everyone says is true. Proof of the rewards for your efforts: I hunted the same lease in Llano county for over 20 years. I was out there, by myself, one summer day and saw some fences that needed fixing. So, I got MY fence repair stuff and was in the process of fixing it. The landowner came by and remarked on it more in passing than anything else. Another time, that same year, a friend and I were out to do some fishing/hog hunting and saw a steer with a bloody foot dragging about 10' of barbed wire fence and a 2-3' piece of fence post. Being Saturday, we corralled the steer, filled a tub with water and tossed out some hay we found. We then went into town and found the only vet that was open and told him our situation. The vet stated he didn't normally do work for our landowner but would come out anyway. He came and we helped him fix up the steer and we all went on our way. Later that week I got a call from the landowner thanking me for it. When I took over as 'Lease Manager' I went and spoke with the landowner. He stated that we had been his best lease-holders by far. He was going to raise everyone's lease fee from $1500 per family to $2000 per family but would keep ours at $1500 since he figured we'd saved him at least that much in the past years. Help in whatever way you can. It will be repaid in spades.

About 15 years ago I helped a nearby landowner fix his tractor simply because I enjoy fixing things, and because he was a senior citizen of limited means. He often dropped by the lease I was on to visit and was a pleasure to be around. When our lease failed, he actually asked me to start hunting his place. He has since passed but I continue to hunt his place because of the sincere friendship I had developed with him and his family. Sincere and longstanding relationships with landowners often make hunting a much greater escape from the stresses of work and life.

we hunted a place for 15-20 years for free ... LO said treat it like your own and put $100 worth of repair to the old farm house each year. After the first 6 months, he told my dad forget the repairs to the farmhouse, we had already done way more work on roads, fences, well, windmill, barns and watching over his prized Hereford bulls. We still did the work on the farmhouse to make it more live-able for us to use as a camp-house. This has been many years ago, but I ran into the old (92 y/o) LO at a wedding a month or so back and he remembered me very well and brought up all the stuff we did out on this particular ranch and told me if he still owned the place, I would still be welcome to hunt it for free.
but ... as others stated, each LO is different and I wouldn't do anything without asking first except for tending to troubled livestock.
