150 or 162 grain bullets.
Which weight would y’all recommend for elk at extended ranges?

Varget has been working for me since it came out but I mostly shoot 140 or 140gr bullets in the Remington 788. Before Varget came along was loading IMR4350 a lot. Anything in those burn should work well, but those are the powder I have used in 35+ years with the 7mm-08

Varget is the powder I was thinking was so popular. They had some, so I got it.
Thank you!

Varget-4350..... That being said I'm going to give 8208 a run soon.

I have spent a good bit of time with 7-08's.
There may be some dissension here on the forum but on game I think the sweet spot is a 140. Long range targets a 160. Your bullet selection is up to you and your primary purpose. Here are some powders that have worked well for me. Varget IMR 4350 IMR 4451 IMR 4064 H 380 Varget is where I would start

On bullets, I was thinking either the150 or 162 ELD-X. I’ll run the numbers, but I’m open to suggestions.

I ran Hornady 154gr interlocks for a while, liked on game performance of the 140gr partitions better so switched back yo them.

Made a load with 150's in the 7mm-08 A.I. on virgin brass yesterday, just because I wanted to know. I can't give an opinion yet until I work up a fire formed load. There's a fair chance I go back to the 162's. I know them well in the standard 7mm-08, and have shot 100 of them in the A.I. version. Those bullets and H-Varget just work. Ease up to 41.0 gr of H-Varget for 162's.

Varget and 162 Amax worked very well for me at range. Very consistent. Speed was moderate from a 21” barrel but the rifle would bust clays at 300 and 600 on command. Consistently rang the gong at 1000 as well but I didn’t have enough skill or glass to make good groups at that distance. Best group was 1.5” at 600. Varget. Ymmv.

The ELD is close enough to the Amax to give me confidence in achieving similar results. I’ll start with Varget and the 162’s and get after it.

I'm a big fan of BLC2 powder in 7-08.
