We're ready to put the next two on the wall. It's 1/4 red oak over sheet rock, and won't hit a stud. In the past, I've used a toggle bolt with a nut on the shaft, leaving the screw extended into the back of the plywood on the shoulder mount.
I've seen a couple other ways, just hate to bore a big old hole in the wall for that toggle into nice oak paneling...
What are your thoughts? Is there something newer and innovative?

How far from the stud is the mount going to be? I am going to buy a cheaper single arm pivoting flat screen or TV wall mount to mount a couple on this year in holes or close to corners. That way they will be away from the wall and then I can turn/pivot them how I want them. Other thing would be to take a thin slab or piece of milled mesquite or oak or etc type would to span from stud to stud(s) to mount your mounts to. You could hang photos or whatever in between the mounts on the wood.

I normally just take a 3” long woodscrew and go into the Sheetrock.
Have not had an issue yet knock on wood.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Hit a stud or be prepared for a fall.

might look into the Hillman Monkey Hook Picture Hangers ... depending on the weight of the mount. LINK

Get the nylon sheet rocks anchors. I've had much better luck with those over the lead/metal variety.

Stick with the studs or have 3/4 plywood installed under the Sheetrock. Not worth the risk.

Stick with the studs or have 3/4 plywood installed under the Sheetrock. Not worth the risk. I've got 10 or more whitetails in my trophy room that are hung on the nylon sheetrock hangers. None of them have ever fallen. But a whitetail wall pedestal is about all the weight they will handle.

When I had my mancave built, I had them line the walls with 3/8 plywood behind the Sheetrock. I just put a screw or nail where I want and Bingo!

This ^^^^^^^^ 5 yrs ago I went with 1/2" plywood on my walls behind the sheetrock to allow me to hang mounts anywhere. I would never try to hang one on sheetrock only since there is to much leverage on the anchor depending on the type of form/size of animal mounted. Might work for a while but you have to clean mounts after a while and that taking them up/putting them back up is going to be the issue over time.

I use these for all my deer and smaller animals. They are rated for 50 pounds. They are super easy to install with a driver, or a Phillips bit in a drill. For bigger animals like an elk, I find a stud, or I cut out the sheetrock and put a 2x6 on the flat between the studs, then put the sheetrock back on and hang it from that board. https://www.homedepot.com/p/E-Z-Ancor-St...25316/100391938

This is 1/4 in oak over sheetrock. It has pulled a nylon sheath, screw out. Saw it away from the wall before it fell

Toggle bolt then that goes all the way through. I use regular picture anchors and work fine directly in sheetrock. I use 50 lb anchors with zero issues. Sounds like you have a covering over the sheetrock that is pulling out so doesn't get set properly.

depending on the weight I would want to know if the sheet rock was nailed or screwed in. Best case screw into a stud

Toggle bolt then that goes all the way through. I use regular picture anchors and work fine directly in sheetrock. I use 50 lb anchors with zero issues. Sounds like you have a covering over the sheetrock that is pulling out so doesn't get set properly. No the first one was a plastic anchor with the screw expanding it, saw the mount hanging away from the wall and got it down, the anchor was loose. It's a sheetrock wall, that was later covered with 1/4 inch red oak panels that are picture framed. But with the panels centered on studs, the center of the frames are at 24inches from studs, hence the anchors. I guess I'm going to try a larger anchor first, before going to the toggles. On one way I could go all the way through to the garage and use a big bolt, but the other wall is exterior, insulated and brick exterior.... no help there. Thanks for all the ideas guys, hopefully I'll get a chance to finish these soon.
