lol u must have some wicked cows that really like corn!!!!!!! ive had some bent , but they never get into my pens. i know if the deer would get in the taller pannels they could easily jump out, but it seemed like they didnt want to jump in!! Just what happened in my situation, i also couldnt afford to build pens as big as yours. Now i have it so the hogs can get in, and the destroyed my feeder (almost) they got it knocked over, the box with the timer came open, the remington timer had been chewed up by pigs ( i assume) the wires shredded, and it still does not work!!!! now that ruined my day lol!!! i reinforced my anchors that day!

Perch,
After hunting on your new lease for 2 years before getting off, I learned a lot. You will not have problems with pigs. They may come through but they wont stay. The cows never venture up to where you will be hunting. The only thing you need to worry about is the neighbors goats. The guy who hunted where you are now hunting never had a problem with them or the cows. You could probably manage to not have a feed pen but I would highly monitor it with trail cams and as soon as I noticed a goat, then I would have it goat proofed in a heartbeat.

distance shot, but ours are big enough to have a protein and corn feeder, and plenty of room for the deer. It is about a 30 foot circle.

I tried something I read in another post on here, and it worked great. I used to make square pens, but they recommended overlapping the panels a foot or 2 and wiring them together in a circle or oval. I used 8 panels, and instead of wire, I used heavy rope/cable clamps, and that pen stands up by itself, and is pretty solid. No play at all when you ratchet those rope clamps on it. I put 8 t-posts in for added support, and I think that's all I'll need (no cattle to worry about, just sheep and pigs). Took me and a friend an hour or 2 at most to complete. Even with the overlaps, it seems a lot bigger than the square ones I've done with the same number/size panels, and its definitely more stable.

Curious, what is a rope/cable clamp, not sure I have seen one and where did you get it at. Can you describe it a little more.

Mine is roughly 55X35. The last one we built was just too small and you never saw as many deer at the feeder like when there wasn't a pen. The new one we see alot of deer in the pen at one. Some even bed down with the feeder now which is fine by me.

Big as you can afford. I have seen them as big as 10 acres at a ranch near Uvalde and about 50 by 50 yards at Turkey Mountain outside of Bracketville.

If you can I would use 12 pannels. In this case it's the bigger the better!

I don't like to put pens around my feeders if possible but when necassary, the bigger the better. In South Texas our pens are 50x50, primarily to keep the hogs out. In the Hill Country I am using portable panels (16)10 footers in a circle to keep the cows out. Thank goodness, I don't have to worry about livestock or wild hogs out west and use no pens.
Adios,
Gary

only reason i have pens is because of cattle. I might try to convince my grandpa to leme fence off 20 acres or so and plow it up to plant a food plot in next year, then ill have a really big feedr pen!!!! course i might just plow up like an acre and build a lil fence..... id hate to drag a big old plow and drag up there just for an acre though!

KRS, a rope clamp is kinda like a small muffler pipe clamp... a U shaped bolt threaded on both ends and a curved/fitted cross piece that has 2 holes and 2 bolts to tighten it down. I also use them on my winch feeders where they hang on a cable. Both ends of the cable loop feed through and are held by the clamp. I can't recall the size I bought, but they fit perfectly over 2 heavy gage panel wires with just enough thread to secure the 2 bolts down. 10 x better than tie wire, but they will set you back a bit more. You can get them at Tractor Supply, or any hardware store, but I'd buy in bulk if I could find a cheaper volume source online.

I'm thinking if we did need to build a pen, the dozed off place in the pic would be about the size I would want.

I built my first feed pen back in January. Mine is 16x16.

However, I had HELL doing it. Partly because I was working by myself, but also I couldn't get the little metal things they gave me to wrap around the t-posts very well. Is there an easier way of doing this than just using needle-nose pliers??

it all depends on how long you want to work on said pen and how much money you wanna spend, we usually opt for the least amount of work and money that comes out effective, figure enough room for 7 to 10 deer i say about 1000 to 2000 sq feet

we do a 30 foot circle. But we use the 4x4 welded wire so it comes in a nice big roll thats easy to make one big continuous circle out of. I've never seen such crazy approaches to keeping hogs and cows out of feeders. Ya'll have some crazy livestock!? I've only had a problem with a few bulls wanting to scratch on the fence, but a few shots with a marble from a slingshot cut that crap out.
