Looks like a Commercial Whitetail Mount. With that said, this particular deer would be catergorized as "Long Haired" and as such, I don't like to see that much muscle detail in one, mainly because you won't find them like that in real life. Many taxidermists think that adding this muscle detail makes the mount look nicer, but it is done for commercial purposes and IMO I think it detracts from a long haired WT mount. To each his own on this issue.
I like the dish in the forehead but it would have appeared nicer if the red hair on the forehead had been groomed sideways and the skin taxied over toward the top of the eyes. The 2 different ear attitudes are very nice and helps bump the piece up. I wished I could examine the deer more closely to see how the ear butts were built as they may have some issues from what is shown.
The form is appropriate for a large northern deer such as this and the rut pads are a nice touch...unfortunately the skin has been stretched because of this and the white throat patch looses it's definitive square shape and is too large. That's really nitpicking though.
My only real issue with the mount is what appears to be the white sceleral band showing in the front of the deer's left eye. While this is possible on a deer, I don't believe it would be present on this particular pose. Still I would need to see another pic from the side view to be sure. If you fix this one issue, the entire mount takes a huge step up. It would bug the crap out of me if the band is showing to the front.
Now, if you just want to pick it apart, the hair patterns inside the ears are incorrect. The "guard hairs" should be groomed and flow with the interior of the ear. The bottom lip, while exposed on a buck more than 50% of the time in nature is too large and it appears to have some overspray into the hair.
Finally, it also appears that the deer is not hung correctly on the wall. I think that it needs to be rotated about 3/4" to the viewer's left. This will help to balance out the rack and the breast area as well. When a deer is hung it also helps to take a brush and to "comb" the hair that is closest to the wall towards the floor to give the mount a cleaner appearance.
Overall, depending on what someone paid for it, I would say it is a nice Commercial Whitetail Mount. It's not the top of the line and it certainly is better than average. It is important to point out that even though I used to routinely mount over 100 whitetail a year, the above comments are only an opinion...that and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee.
Overheard at my last convention: "If you wanna make a million bucks in taxidermy, start out with 2 million and in 5 years, if you're lucky, you'll have a million left."

Thanks Matt!!
The left eye is the only thing that stands out to me and does kinda bother me. But this is also my first WT mount and I really havent seen "quality" work in person..so the reason I asked.
I really wish I could have brought it back with me when I drove back to Texas...but this year I will figure out the paperwork deal to take it across state lines.
But all in all I got what I expected without doing much homework on the taxidermist I took him to.
Is the eye easily fixable or does it require a big surgical procedure?

Assuming the skin was tanned with modern methods you can simply soak up the area to rehydrate the skin around the eye. You would have to remove and then work the eye from the outside, but yes it can be fixed and repainted.

Thats a nice buck if I had seen it, here is no doubt it would be in the same situation in my home, however I dont like like all the muscles in the neck being that defined I have never seen a deer look like that when it was alive only after the taxi got done with it.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

I'm with Brandon, thats a great deer. I would be proud to have it on my wall....but the others are right, that left eye does look funny.

can you get a mount that dosen'tlook like a deer was on steriods?
my buddy had one done in the mid 90's, it looks perfect, the neck is full, not overly muscular, and looks just like the day he shot it. the next one he had done in 03' looks like it cage fought for a living.
even my axis, had a nice, plump, full neck when he bit the dust. when I got it back from the taxi he looks like he was on an excercise program
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Yes, you can. However...most taxi's give them a more muscular look because 99% of our customers want them that way. When you drop off your mount...look what is in the showroom. If the mounts are more 'beefy' than you like, just tell the taxidermist that you prefer the smoother look without all the muscle detail.

I like the reddsih coat.. Is that a north of the red river deer?
