I'm looking for a scope in the 14-16x max, 42mm or 44mm in the $250 range. I have had luck so far with Vortex, but I have read where some think that there might be some better options available. I would appreciate any input on this. And yes, per my wife, 250 is the limit. Thanks again.

Athlon Talos or Midas line of scopes I have a talos 1-4. It has shockingly nice glass.

At that price point I don' think I would go with 14x-16X. I don't think your glass quality will be very good at that magnification. Probably be much better with 9x-10X max power. I have one of these. It's a 3-10 mil dot, SFP, mil turrets. Made in Japan. Glass is good for the price point. Savage Grand Slam Tactical

Nikon ProStaff 5 I really wanted to get Vortex's Diamondback Tactical but went this route solely based on the glass quality (at that price point, of course)

Prostaff - agreed
Probably the best glass in that price range for a hunting scope.

I have a Prostaff 7 ($350ish I believe) and an Athlon talos btr $189 and the athlon glass is way clearer. But the Prostaff is really solid too. I think a few years from now athlon will have the market share that vortex did 2 years ago.

I am curious about the Athlon line. I need to find a carrier and check some of those out.

I am curious about the Athlon line. I need to find a carrier and check some of those out. I’m ordering my second this week. I’m getting a Neos which is the cheapest line they offer for a custom 10/22 I’m doing. I’ll likely be getting an Argos BTR in the coming months.
