Looks like I will be hunting a couple of hundred acres next season off the Brazos in Haskell county next season. Property is moderately brushed with some inter dispersed small wheat fields here and there. Ample numbers of deer, hogs, turkey and dove. More wanting to know if there are any tested and proven tricks to pulling deer more prevalantly off/over the river vs non-river hunting property. Also, any warning signs to look out for when hunting riverside property; poachers, excessive varmints, etc.
Thanks,

I hunted a place on a river when I lived in Montana. I’m not sure about your setup, but the deer would feed on fields at night and filter back down into the river bottom at sunrise. The most effective way to hunt mornings for me was to get in a kayak and paddle to where my stand was located just off the river. It was a deadly stand in a 50 yard wide pinchpoint on a good wind. Had more issues with road hunters driving the edge of fields than anyone ever coming up from the river. The fishing is a bonus! Good luck- I think the advantages of hunting on a river far outweigh any drawbacks.

I hunted the 'salt fork' of the Brazos for years. My best stand overlooked the river, up in the cedar brakes. Deer seem to concentrate there, especially once the mesquite flats are bare. Elevated blind is the way to go. Rattling is very effective out there too.

Near any river = feed pens around all feeders, the bigger the pen the better. If you have hogs coming to your feeders the deer will go elsewhere, I don't agree with those that like wheat fields around them, deer eat all night in the fields & if they have semi decent cover nearby hardly move during daylight.
Take a chair & a few weekends & just go sit in different areas Am & Pm to see what happens / what the deer do naturally, then pick a spot.
I know a few that hunt around that area, none have mentioned poaching / trespassing problems, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear it about anywhere in the state.

You'll be glad you took that property. Just keep in mind that deer trails there aren't the same as central tx. The trails can be a 50 yard swath of land. Instead of a 3f wide trail. Use treeless openings as a place to blow your scent into. Usually nothing will come from there and if they do you can see/shoot if you wanted. Walk the river bank and look for crossings. See where they are headed when they get on your place. You don't need to be right on the river. Within 200 yards. The area I had on that river had bluffs so we put our feeders down low and stand up on the bluffs. We could come in from up above and they could never have a clue. There are tons of channel cats in that river. Find a good long deep run and they will be there

^^^This is good info. Feeders down low, stands up high if possible. Don't discount hunting the edge of a wheat field. Tripod or pop-up will help here. It usually takes a couple of seasons to figure out patterns. The sooner you can get access to start scouting, the better. Deer are making serious trails right now.

Great nuggets guys, thankfully I will be joining existing hunters that are doing many of these things already, so really just reestablishing the current hunting spots. Looking forward to my first Riverside hunting experience.

Joining existing hunters (plural) on a couple hundred acres in that area can be crowded unless y'all have a couple hundred acres of above average deer habitat for the area. Not at all trying to be negative, I hope it works out for you.

DQ, I hunted the Brazos for several years, best set up for us was a blind looking toward the tree line and river, food plot in between, would be the "bees knees"! We had deer come from everywhere in the mornings, as they where out all night, evening it was usually from the thicker areas, but the growth along the river was a major thoroughfare, so after 2 years, we moved out of it and did much better (bow and rifle). bow season we had stands just on the outside edge.
And talk about late summer dove hunting, best I have ever experienced, we sat where ever the water was down and provided a mudflat for the dove to land, insane amount of birds.

FYI, you can look at the bark on the trees and see where the high water line has been sometimes, we lost 2 feeders the first year hunting in the trees by the river, water came up and ruined. Also had a ladder blind taken, followed the AH foot prints right to the waters edge, so they boated in.

Put up big feeder pens. I have a big feeder pen and I also have a satellite feeder I leave open for pigs. The pen and satellite feeder at 250 yards apart.

Haven't hunted that close to a river but anytime I've been down on one the game trails are easy to find. Deer tracks, coyote tracks, bobcat tracks, beaver Tracks, Coon tracks, everywhere. My sister just bought a place right on the Cimarron river in Oklahoma she only has 2 acres but it's right on the river. I threw up a game cam and in first night had deer and a big bobcat on the camera just 100 yards from her house.
