Has anyone been bow hunting in North Dakota? I have a hunt set for this fall and have never hunted anything but the thickets of East Texas. Something tell me it might be a tad different.

The Badlands back in the 1960s, in the western part of the state, one thing it is cold, and the terrain is a killer. In the eastern part of the state flat and the state tree is a fence post. Just bird hunted the east half.

Pretty much what dogcatcher said.

Stationed up there in the 80's at Minot and Grand Forks. Saw a deer once, it was about 40 miles away.

Have fun, wear lots of layers of clothing. Don't stick your tongue to anything metal. Don't pee on your hand and try to open your vehicle door (actually happened to missle cops at the missle sites in campers). Helps if you speak Norse up there.

Took my nephew on a Buffalo hunt up there one spring break. It was -16 degrees. Hunted the south eastern part of the state. The terrain was mostly flat with only trees on the edge of creeks and fence lines. There could'nt be any deer there. When it got later in the afternoon, hundreds and I mean hundreds of deer appeared everywhere. Our guide said that there where quite a few nice bucks in the area and he showed us quite a few he had taken. My suggestion is to buy one of those blinds that look like a bale of hay, make some adjustments to it and set up next to other rows of Hay. The deer actually eat the hay like cattle up there from what I saw. Good Luck

Those were not trees you saw, they were fence posts that some Nodak glued sticks on.

I was at Minot in the 60's. Did the people of Minot still treat the base people like they were lepers? Sorriest place I ever had the displeasure of spending anytime at.

If you got stationed in Minot over a winter you are a very tough man

I spent 3 winters in Minot. Then went army and went to Vietnam in the Infantry. The year in Vietnam was a lot better than a winter in Minot, even with a Purple Heart it was better than Minot.

Two years ago, I went to ND for a combo hunt; upland birds and deer. I bow hunted north of Bismarck. I set up on a tree line next to an alfalfa field. It was a mid Sept hunt. I only bow hunted in the evenings. I saw plenty of deer and a quite a few decent bucks. They would move out into the alfalfa fields at dusk. The better bucks seemed to be isolated around heavy cattails next to tanks. I’m going back again this year.

I was at Minot from May 80 to Sep 81. The people were pretty friendly especially the owner of Harvey's Gun Shop. I went in there one day just looking. He asked me what I want and told him an 870. He handed me one and a box of shells and said bring him $25 each payday. I paid him back in 3 months.

We use to hang out at an all night coffee shop and they always treated us nice.

I guess it was the Vietnam thing when you were there.

The winter of 80/81 was really cold. I had to walk around the Weapons Storage Area one night in Feb 81 to do the check of the fence alarms and underground ones. It was well below -100 with the wind chill. Most people can't imagine that kind of cold.

Once we got snowed in the WSA for a few days. There was one time we went to work in April I think and it was in the 70's. By the time we got off work at midnight, it was below zero.

I was at Grand Forks from 84-88. Not much different than Minot. Lots of snow and cold as he!!.

It was different in my time there. We were warned not to go to town by ourselves. We always traveled in groups of 3 or more.

We lived n a 2 story house on the northern edge of the base, nothing between us and the north pole when the wind blew. Had one blizzard we had to shovel snow away from the second floor window to dig down to the ground and then shovel that chit to clear the drive. You guessed it got the drive done and the snow plow filled it back up. They had the plows working 24/7 for about a week just to keep up with the snow and blowing snow.

At least Minot did not have the flooding that Grand Forks and Fargo did.

When we were there Minot AFB had the highest suicide rate of any military installation in the world. There was one Major there on 6 month TDY, from Oct to Mar. Hung himself in January when he found out he was getting permanent orders to Minot.

Fishing was pretty good and was the upland bird hunting. We had places that we helped the farmers during harvest time and they made sure we had plenty of good hunting when the time came. Forget he name of the lake northeast of the base, about an hour or more, started with an "M", great fishing for northern pike. Then there was lake Darling, too many local there but we made up for it during the winter. We would let them set up and then use their ice shacks for pylons as we raced around the lake. Way before cell hones so when they left to call the LEOs we would haul arse back to the base.

Sounded like fun, but the place sucked. Vietnam in the Infantry was choice duty compared to 3 years in that arse hole of a place.

Back on track, do a Google for Nodak Outdoors Forum. They have a pretty good area wide forum for hunters of the frozen prairies.

You have to kind of watch those people, some of them have had their brain cells frozen to many times. They don't realize that 30 below zero is cold, they think it is shorts and T shirt weather.

One of the guys in the group, that is going, is from Wiliston (NW corner of state). He left there about 30 years ago so I don't think he has very much brain damage.

I hunt South Dakota every year and its very similar. The deer are where they should be, bed in thickets and feed in alfalfa and corn. Just set up in the transition area.
The weather can be 70+ or 11 degrees so bring it all.
Good Luck

Ha ha. LOL!! This is so funny. My Dad was born and raised in the area. He said as soon as he truned 17, he joined the military simply to get the hell out of North Dakota!!! Nothing to do there but farm, drink beer and freeze your butt off.

Dogcatcher, I think you're talking about Lake McMann or Lake Mork - both are about 20 miles from the base.

That lake was Lake Metigoshe, there was a state park there near Bottineau, ND. Great fishing in that area, the lake is in an area known as the Turtle Mountains, I would say they were more hills than mountains, but it looked a lot different than around Minot. Lake Darling was right north of the base not a real big lake but still pretty good fishing

You are right on the Thermacell, they are the size of small airplanes and sucked gallons of blood at a time. The only place I saw bigger mosquitoes was in Canada. Those in Canada used fire hoses to suck the blood out of you.

The family farm is up there and I bow hunt every year on the ND/SD border.. both states are divided between the flat land and the hills. If hunting the flats, expect a LOT of open land and you'll be hunting in tree rows (wind breaks) and the deer will pile up in there especially if the corn has been combined. Feeders are frowned upon, but just made legal up there about 2 years ago if I remember correctly. Awesome place though, don't drive too fast at night or you'll be at the body shop pretty quick!
