So is there anything wrong with running the FL die without the expander to bump the shoulder .002”-.003” and then running the collet die to size the neck? That's a good question, never heard of anyone doing that. I wonder though if you'd be able to slip the mandril into the case.

Might be a bit of a problem, but not one that can't be overcome. Better, IMO, to just get a body die and use it with the collet die.

you will get a round that won't feed , eventually
then you know to run that brass through a body die
I'm betting you're wrong about that. Time will tell. Time has already told ME you need to bump shoulders periodically. ^^Me too. It is also a very unfortunate scenario when a fired brass will not eject, without getting ugly with it. I saw this at a ranch in September, at their rifle range. Guy fired his shot, wrestled the bolt handle up, and could not go any farther. Someone came and got me. I told him, I know what to do, but it is pretty violent, and one of two things will happen. The bolt will open, or the bolt handle will break off. He said, I've got a spare rifle, go for it. I stood the rifle, muzzle up, and stomped on his bolt handle with my boot. The bolt opened. I asked if he neck sizes only. Sure enough. I recommended he stopped doing that, he agreed. Been neck sizing for about 5 yrs now and never have had that happen, but perhaps some day.

So if most competitive shooters full length resize and or neck turn, wouldn't that be the way to go?

So is there anything wrong with running the FL die without the expander to bump the shoulder .002”-.003” and then running the collet die to size the neck? yes. the problem is, the neck area of a FL die is tighter than the expander ball so its actually setting your neck tension and not the neck area of the die. if you remove the expander ball. your neck tension will be VERY HIGH. the collet die will loosen it some but not enough due to the spring back i mentioned earlier. you can bump shoulders with a "body die" and use the lee collet or use a "bushing die" without a bushing and the lee collet die. the cheap approach would be to take an extra FL die and open the neck area up so its not doing any sizing then use the collet die.

Robby Neck turning isn't overly common outside of benchrest or f-class. Full length sizing on the other hand has pretty much been accepted and used by all across the board. One thing to keep in mind when you nk size and get a slight crush or more effort needed for chambering that is bad on the lugs of the bolt and can wipe the lugs of lube causing galling.

Competition shooters want the brass to perfectly match the chamber. They don't contend with the grit and grime of a hunting or combat gun. Neck turning is drudgery and usually done to clean them concentric or reduce thickness from necking down. I neck turned a lot of 556 brass before 300 BLK was readily available.
One shot is all it should take.

About two hours after sunrise, the north west Oklahoma sand is going to be blown into every part of rifle, and shooter. Once home, my first rifle cleaning tool is the air compressor with blow gun. I've never got a rifle that dirty hunting with it. -.002" shoulder bump is what all the brass had before I shot it.

Sounds fun, I lived near Elk City for 6 yrs working north of Sayre. Tumbleweeds 6 ft high. Red sand in everything. Lots of yodel dogs. Really the expander ball isn't the problem. The undersized neck of the resizing die is what causes the issues. The expander ball just brings that back for proper bullet tension. I like to run an expander ball just to clean up the ejection dings and all new brass to verify bullet fit. Then partial neck size with a bushing or collet die. I really like those Redding bushing dies. But I spend too much time on brass prep. I try to use lots of new brass, sort by weight, neck turn, debur flash holes, uniform primer pockets, tumble clean and polish, and anneal the necks after every firing. OCD no doubt.
One shot is all it should take.

I LOVE the no-lube aspect of the collet die! Another benefit is not having to trim, not to mention the tightening of groups!
