Going into town with the old man today to get a waffle and some coffee, when we see this fawn running the a fence line on the highway. He just didn't look right- falling down, panicked, unkempt and thin. We pulled over to watch him for awhile, look for mamma, etc. Finally made the decision to try to get him. Once we got him we drove around and did find a dead axis doe a few hundred yards away, possibly his mama. He came up to me and sniffed me and I grabbed him. We took him to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility. They said we did the right thing- he is definitely dehydrated/starving and might have an injury to a rear leg. He tried like heck to nurse my finger and drink my coffee so he should bottle feed easily. Anyway, exotic or not I'm glad we were able to help him. We named him Waffles, as our trip to get some didn't happen, but helping him out was better!

Very cool, he looks really calm almost asleep on your lap like a dog. Good work.

Thank you, he was shivering when I first got him in the truck but once he dried off he did actually go to sleep! He panicked a few times when the windshield wipers kicked on, we hit a pothole, etc. and man even at 2-3 weeks old (that's the age the wildlife facility guessed him to be) those little hooves hurt Luckily he was mostly very good.

Awesome story! Hope he makes a full recovery. It would have been easy to drive on past but great job on helping him out, thumbs up!

The little kid in me would have wanted to take him home. That would be fun.

Thanks y'all, it was nice to help him out. I really did want to keep him (we even bought some milk replacement) but 1) I'm not sure that's legal and 2) I was afraid I'd not give him what he needed and he wouldn't make it. Ended up giving the milk replacement and bottle as a donation to the facility instead.

Good job and good idea not to keep him. Any deer, especially axis, are dangerous as adults if they have no fear of people. Getting maimed or killed by your pet is a downer.
God is so good to me.

Thanks y'all. I'm still tickled about getting to hold him and be so close to him. Amazing to see an animal who could get to 200 lbs the size of a lap dog.
BigRon, you are correct and that's a good reminder the wildlife lady also told me. People keep them and the Bucks can get rowdy when they mature. Better for everyone this way.

Awesome thing you did. All of God's creatures deserve a little kindness occasionally. Except fire ants, squirrels and feral hogs...I hate those things.
Mmmm Hmmm
