Is there any difference in the overall performance of steel that carries polished bluing as opposed to matte bluing? Based on what I've read on the subject, both make use of an oxide bluing process...
"Black oxide will show the surface finish of the steel so the surface must be prepped prior to applying the black oxide. The black oxide itself doesn't give a matte finish. If you polish the steel first then you'll have a polished blue/black oxide finish. If you blast the steel with glass beads or other media then you get a matte blue finish."

No performance difference in what I have seen, other one Is shiny the other is flat. The flat doesn't reflect light as much. Depends on the rifle, flat would look funny on a polished Weatherby stock though

I wonder if a matte finish might hold wax better than a polished surface.

Might, the rougher texture does provide more surface area. I just use Corosion-X for rust protection, spray it on let set a few minutes then wipe it off. Barrel surface is protected against rust for the season

The rougher the finish the more prone it is to rust.

The rougher the finish the more prone it is to rust. Why is that? Is it because of the larger surface area, or is it more apt to hold moisture?

I have found the polished finishes seem to hold up better IMHO.

The rougher matte/blasted surface has more "nooks and crannies" to hold moisture, dirt, and other crud. It's cheaper to fab though and hides surface imperfections.

So when it comes to matte bluing, perhaps a good wax, rather than oil, works best as a protective barrier against the elements. Of course some might argue that wax outperforms oil as a protectant for both matte and polished surfaces.

Is there any difference in the overall performance of steel that carries polished bluing as opposed to matte bluing? ..... The steel underneath is the same (assuming we are talking same manufacture) The difference is how much they polish the metal on the outside before they blue it. Should have zero affect on the performance of the barrel from a shooting standpoint. I haven't really noticed any difference in rust resistance. But, my highly polished guns only come out on nice days. The matte blued, duracoated, and stainless guns are for the crummy weather.

I prefer stainless just because ease of maintenance....I do have several blued and parkerize/duracoat type finishes.....
