The snow yesterday reminded me of a hunt in Concho county in the snow. It was back before I always carried a camera. Sis pointed a covey still on the roost. We went on the have a great morning hunt in the snow. There was another time on the same lease when we had to quit because of the snow. Here's a stock picture I found with quail roosting in the snow. Have you ever?

Have you ever? Bill, Every time I have hunted in a deep snow, it seems the birds of the covey only get up one at a time. A lot of the time you can stand in one spot and just shoot the birds one by one. But then you have to disciplined and not kill the whole covey. They hold well in a deep snow.

I remember one of the only snow days we got off for school in ODESSA when I was a kid. Some buddies and I were killing rabbits on the Macelroy ranch and drinking beer all day. We saw a covey of blues bushed up under a big cactus. I shot one bird running around outside the cactus with a 22. When he was flopping another bird ran out to see what was going on and I shot him too. Come to find out you can kill a whole covey if you let them run out from under a cactus one at a time and don’t shoot into the whole bunch. They made a fine feast that afternoon.

Here's what we got Wednesday. My dogs had never seen snow before.

Back in the late 60's and 70's that was a skillet shot. Never dreamed we would ever be short on birds like now.

I was wondering if anyone would admit to a skillet shot.

Have had some great hunts in the area in snow! Over the years hunted them on the Johnson ranch(remember it on loop 338 and Kermit Hwy?) and used to have place north of Greenwood on I20. Fresh snow about 8-10" deep keeps them from running and they can borrow up after landing and can selective harvest then leave covey numbers safe. Have hunted pheasants in panhandle in 18-24" snow and caught more on ground than shot, my blue heeler had her own limit of catches!
Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock! 12/26/03-10/25/13

Never hunted quail in the snow but did hunt pheasant. At times I was so cold I couldn't get the safety off on my 870. I'd do it again just to hunt with my dad one more time.
No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

Best quail hunt I ever had was in the snow. Dad and I walked out our front door and had hundreds of acres of farmland to hunt, and quail were thick. This was in the mid 70s in north Dallas, of all places.

A friend and I just started running our dogs there. A Forman drove up in a pickup. We walked toward him. He said that a man named Harrington owned the land. We knocked on Harrington's door. He told us we were welcome. We later shot a few birds there.

We built our home in 'Renner', later annexed by Dallas but was in Collin county. A sort of no man's land when it came to law enforcement. Plano cops said it was Dallas, Dallas said it was Plano. They told us to not shoot back towards Preston and we were good to go. Development ruined our hunting area. 190 and Preston road area. Unbelievable quail numbers back in the 70s.
