This season is my black labs first season out and I have noticed he shivers like it is a late season 20 degree hunt. With the water as warm as it is and it only down to the high 30s my other dogs would never have been cold. I got him a vest and it didn't seem to make a difference. I am wondering if anyone has had a dog that shivers when it isn't that cold and when to know they have had enough.

Mine shivers, but it is because shes excited. One thing that I do is I bring a towel or something to dry her off when she gets out of the water. that helps are a lot.

I've noticed neither one of my labs have put on their winter coat yet. They usually have by this point. One of my labs got cold the other morning also. Undercoat is still very thin on him. Cooler weather should help them put it on. My labs also live in the house - so that slows the process of them putting it on IMO.
For what its worth - none of our horses have put on much of a winter coat yet either. Doesn't bode well for a cold winter. Although they seem to put one on overnight when it does get cold.

Mine shivers when it's 75 degrees during teal season. Like others said, it's out of excitement and not cold.

Do yourself and your dog a favor, pay attention. keep the pup out of the water while waiting, feed high protein prior to hunt, watch the gum color. If they are going hypothermic the gums will show it by changing some color. I made a mistake with a dog years ago that almost cost her her life and will never do that again. Some dogs shiver out of excitemnet, mine does now, but I would encourage you to pay attention.

I do the same thing...I feed her on the way in the truck cause she burns so many calories from the time we bank the boat till we get back to the truck. Also, if possible on a sunny day (I had to do this the other day) take her vest off if things get real slow and let her hair dry out and the vest.

Another thing everybody should do but many don't is tailor your dog vests. Just about every photo I see of a dog in a vest is comical. I was guilty as well. A properly fitted vest should keep your dog dry.

The purpose of the vest is not to keep your dog dry, but to retain heat, like a wetsuit. You take the vest off and steam pours out, it's working. Don't shampoo your dog during hunting season, your dog needs to retain its natural oils to shed water, this will help your dog dry off better than anything. My dog gets colder on the boat ride vs hunting.

A friend of mine used to have a dog that would shiver so you would let it inside the house. The dog would not shiver if it didn't see you, but if it saw you, it would shiver with a puppy face, smart dog lol.

The problem is the neck holes are huge and most do not fit correctly around the shoulders. If you will tailor them using the method I provided above not only will your vest work better she/he won't looks so goofy.

The vest on my dog Molly that passed 2015 (dang, can't believe it's been that long), that vest was tight, it was all I could do to zip it up. Molly was about 75 lbs. I try putting the same vest on my new pup Tara, she is about 55 lbs, it is really big on her. I'm gonna try and tailor that to her. If I can't get it to fit I'll get a new vest.

It really is pretty easy. I'm not sure why they make the neck holes so big. The vest I'm using now fit really tight on the body but the neck and leg holes where just big. After taking out thatvextra material it fits much better.
