Mud motor for shallow and versatility, out Board for more power and quiet. Personally I run a mud rig so I can drive in and out of where I want to go, not really having to push or pull my boat. Id be interested in seeing how a jack plated 90 or higher would preform in shallow shallow muddy stuff. I'm not talking on plane either, I'm talking sitting down trying to get out of a mudhole you just got done hunting..

I've got an outboard on the back of my boat. While it wont run nearly as shallow as a mud motor, I've had it moving in less than 12", which is good enough for me.

GatorTail all the way... the area I hunt, you could not get there without a one. Especially because the land owner does not allow access through his property anymore. So you have to go off the river

I always preferred a mud motor not due to mud but due to stumps. Lower unit on a 90HP Yamahammer can get expensive quick... All depends on the main terrain you hunt only change is it used to be the guys with MM could get where the others couldn't. Now everybody has one. It's only money..... buy both.

I have to run about 2 miles across an open lake to get to my spot so outboard is my only real answer. That being said...stumps are always a problem.

I make 6-8 mile runs across open water all the time, it just takes a little longer to get there than it would with an outboard. As far as handling rough water, the boat has much more to do with the ride than the motor. I more than make up for what time is lost in open water when blowing through a stumpfield.....

It all depends where you hunt but I could never go back to scouting and hunting with an outboard. On a calm day out in open water yeah it would be nice for some more speed. But in the dark during the season I wouldn't want to be going faster than 30 anyways.

Outboard. Can always boat close and make a walk in where I am at least. I have seen areas get ruined by mud motors. 75% of the people who run mud motors don't even need them.
