walking back to my camper i came across some mountain lion tracks on my tank dam. left camper at 6 to sit in pop up. walked across the dam and no tracks. started raining at 7am. stopped at 8am. headed back to camper at 10:15am came across a whole trail of tracks. 4" long and wide. came in by my camper walked across the dam them back went down thru my food plot and into the woods. Creepy. was a 2 hour window for it to do this. no wonder the deer are scarce this year.

Claws out tends to be a canine. Cats walk with retracted claws.

Mountain lion tracks are very easy to tell due to their extremely large feet by comparison

Everyone thinks every track is a dang lion EVERYONE has one on their lease and if not, the neighbor saw one last week and he is a professional trapper so he knows one when he sees one

funny
the interwebs shows pictures of mountain lion prints looking exactly the same. what kind of dog makes a 4"X 4" print? most of the diagrams shows dogs with 2 lobes and the lion 3 lobes on the big pad thats what i based my conclusion as photos of lion prints in soft mud showed claws.

ok most likely dog. just none of the neighbors are aware of a dog that could leave such a large print. old man Krenick looked at em and said large cat. all of our fawn crop are gone. no fawn with any does from this year and i have only seen deer about once a week on various cameras on my property in the last month and my neighbors are seeing the same thing. none of us are taking doe this bow season. we do have large breed of coyote which i believe are a hybrid. 65#+ and sable red but their prints are not that large typically 3.25 by 2.75. I will just have to keep an eye out.
thanks for the help.

thanks for the help. I love how "no neighbors are aware of dog" = obvious cougar. A dog, even if you've never seen one on the property, is still like a zillion times more likely than a friggin' cougar. "All our fawn crop are gone" also points to dog or dogs as cougars don't stay in one place long.

"Oh man, we found some pretty big tracks out by the tank. Probably a dog, but can't be sure."
"Joe, we haven't seen a dog in a couple of months out here."
"You mean...MY GOD...Siberian Tigers must have swam to Alaska following their prehistoric routes from where the land bridge used to be and continued their path down to Texas. It's the only way."
"No arguing that."

I have a cast I took of a lion track in Colorado, it was in semi soft silt/pea gravel type soil. Even in soft material, a cat can fully retract the claws while just walking along.
Now if I can figure out how to post a photo from my phone, I think you will see the clear difference.

Mud usually makes tracks look bigger as does soft ground.
What dog could make 4x4 tracks? Great Dane and a few others.

i concede and yall are still pathetic with your BS. by the way tpwd was taking cougar print castings behind the houses along Salado creek between nacogdoches and wetmore rds. in San Antonio last yr. so in lee county with a population under 17,000 cougars would be rare per se. cougars are more prevelant than you think. they have been in lee county since i was a kid. seen tracks on this same dam before through the years since i was a child and have even heard them. but it is probably just a large dog i shouldnt be concerned. have a nice day.

i think this one would be to small to make dog tracks like that. this cat would be to small either. and yes im sure we have a great dane, great peranese or bull mastiffs, st bernards etc. running around. regardless i have my own place to enjoy and i am constantly supprised by what things turn out to be.

I know mountain lions aren't really very vocal but I heard what I took to be a ML on our place in Lee county. I've heard lots of sounds in the woods but that one sent a chill up my spine. You hear stories about lions all over Texas and Lee county is no exception.

i think it was 2 yrs ago during deer season one was reported to have attacked a horse in Loebau just north of Giddings and was spotted near Lexington. i know we are experiencing high fawn mortality this year and last. last year half the doe were with fawns in tow. this year none and only one yearling doe from last season seems to have survived. my neighbors are observing the same thing as none of us are hunting does this season.
