I have a Weatherby Vanguard VGX. I really dont like the trigger on it. What options do I have? Can I just buy a new trigger for it or does a gunsmith have to do a trigger job on it? What kind of cost am I looking at?

Thanks old town. Thats just what I need. How do I decide what pound of trigger pull to get? Is it dangerous to go to light?

I am not sure what you're used too. I am not a precision shooter so I am not too sure about trigger weights. For a hunting rifle I'd probably want 2-3# of pull. I can vouch for the OEM triggers being horrible. I recently shot a Vanguard Sub Moa chambered in .257 Weatherby. The trigger was gritty, heavy and inconsistent. You'll love the Timney. They are extremly smooth. No anticipation no creep.

Too light is dangerous on anything but a full fledged bench rest paper puncher.

Does anyone have a opinion on what the lightest trigger pull should be for a hunting rifle. At what point do you risk accidental discharge if the rifle is dropped (with safety on)

I personally wouldnt go below 2lb on a hunting rifle. I have mine set at 3 and you would probably be suprised how light it is if all you have shot is a factory trigger. jmho

You asked for options...
The weight of pull on the Vanguard trigger assembly is adjustable. These instructions are from the Owners Manual. If you don't have other issues, gritty, not smooth, you might try this first and save some money on a new trigger assembly. However, there is certainly nothing wrong with Timney triggers. Three pounds is as low as I will go on a hunting rifle.
The trigger assembly has been set at the factory for weight of trigger pull appropriate for most shooters. If you require a heavier or lighter weight of trigger pull, adjust as follows: 1. Unload the rifle (refer to Unloading the Rifle, page 11), remembering to VISUALLY CHECK THE CHAMBER AND THE MAGAZINE TO BE CERTAIN THERE ARE NO CARTRIDGES IN THE RIFLE. 2. Remove the trigger guard assembly and stock (refer to Disassembly of Vanguard® Rifle, page 12 ). 3. Loosen the lock nut on the front adjusting screw. 4. To increase weight of trigger pull, with a screw driver of proper size turn the front adjusting screw clockwise (when viewed from the front) until desired weight of trigger pull is established. To decrease weight of trigger pull, with a screw driver of proper size turn the front adjusting screw counter clockwise (when viewed from the front) until desired weight of trigger pull is established. DO NOT remove the screw. NOTE: For safety reasons, weight of trigger pull can not be adjusted below approximately 3 1/4 pounds. 5. Tighten the lock nut on the front adjusting screw securely. 6. Replace stock and trigger guard assembly

Same here. It's an easy, quick job.
I'd still like to have a Timney but it's not as important as it once was.
