I can't verify these results but I have been told that diesel is just as effective as it is just as noxious to snakes. That and not being explosive like gasoline, its a safer alternative.

My grandpa always used propane and a copper hose.
Funny sorta related story about propane.........
One of our friends on another bb had a bad problem with ants in his yard(the species escapes me right now) that burrow and makes holes in all directions up to 30-40 feet. He had had an exterminator out to kill the ants and paid them big bucks.
Well it seems that the one application did not do the trick and not wanting to pay for another treatment he decided to do it himself.
He had noticed the exterminator using a compressed bottle that resembled a propane bottle so he thought he would give it a try.
After emptying the entire contents into the numerous holes around the center of the mound he declared himself the victor!!!
One morning three days later he goes out to admire his handy work........takes the last drag off his cigarette and tosses it on the ground.
BOOM....!!!
Fire jumps out of the ground all around scaring the crap out of him.........seems the fact that propane being heavier than air and the cool fall temperatures prevented the gas from dissipating.
He found out the hard way and was never able to live that story down.

I'm guessing that this requires at least one good dumb friend and a case, maybe two, of beer. Then bet him he can't do it, stand back and pull up a chair and watch the show.

i have heard that they would gas out their dens with a pump and sprayer. the gas makes the snakes like drunk they come stumbling out of the den and they would grab them with their hands and put them in a burlap sack. they can still bite but they aren't as fiesty as normaly cause of the gas. you could give it a try but under a house is questionable.

A potent blend of all natural and USDA and recommended ingredients-clove oil, cedar oil, cinnamon oil and sulfur combine to effectively repel snakes from yards, gardens, sheds, campsites, patios, decks-anywhere they are undesirable. I would try this first before you burn the house down or worse get burned.
Buy a box of moth balls and get yourself a sling shot (wrist rocket) and shoot the moth balls under every corner under the house.
Nothing likes the smell of moth balls, and it's a lot safer than gas fumes.

Tractor supply sells some things called rodent smoke bombs. The packaging says it will kill skunks and gophers. I have used them and they put out some serious smoke. Try $20 worth of these and or raid fumigators then put some moth balls in there. I honestly dont think you can keep a snake out.

We use the moth balls. If I get a bunch of copper-headed-rattle-mocassins under the house, I'm moving! I fear no man and all snakes.
God is so good to me.

you might want to try Bleach instead. it'll have the same effect as gasoline and because it's gives off chlorine gas it is heavier than air and will stay on the ground.
And it will rust the hell out of any steel in that house from now on.
I would take a hose off of the tractor or car muffler and let it idle for a day or so. Snakes are sensitive to fumes too. I have also heard the dursban and diazanon are both deadly to snakes. Good luck finding any nowadays.
