ok guys this is my second hunting season! last year I got lots of Dove, Lots of Ducks, and one Hog,we have good places to hunt for these but this year I want to get a Deer or 2 so does my gf. Also we want to try and get a Aoudad sheep and some Sand Hill Crain. Can anyone turn me on to a list of public Hunting lands we can look into for each animal?? I love in Corpus Christi and don't mind driving a few hours to hunt or a hike to hunting grounds. I heard that Sand Hill Crain can be taken at Choke Canyon but what is the density?
Any help for me would be awesome! I have been going through the Public Hunting Lands maps on TXPW and am going nuts not being able to find what I'm looking for lol

Go purchase a Type II hunting license and TPWD will mail you a book with all public land properties, species, dates, and regulations.

thanks, ive searched for hours, and the only public hunting lands ive seen that allow deer is way east. I find it hard to believe that there is no public lands south or west of Corpus Christi that allows you to take deer.. or even wild hog. there has to be somewhere, it cant be all down to private property can it?

Welcome to Texas. Almost all deer hunting on public land is going to be by draw only, hunting in the state parks. I don't think there's anything else in your part of the state (I grew up in Corpus Christi).

I forgot to tell you that this only covers the land that is cared for by Texas Parks and Wildlife. It does not cover national parks / foist. or city / county land
Thank You Robert

Your best bet is in the outfitter section.

Mark your calendar for July of next year and apply for draw hunts on the TPWD site.

Go check out the US Army Corps of Engineers. They offer hunting on their land surrounding several lakes in Texas. You can download their hunting booklet from their website. It doesn't have maps but tells you what lands are open to hunting and what species can be hunted. However, deer and hog hunting on these lands is usually bow only with a few also allowing shotgun but no slugs.

Your best bet is in the outfitter section. There are numerous opportunities on large well managed ranches for does for a few hundred bucks in your area. And you will actually see deer and come home with venison. Sandhill crane require decoys and farm fields for consistent opportunities. Hunting public for them is a waste of time and an excercise in frustration. Auodad you will have to draw for on the few public properties that have them. In Texas, you have to pay to play.
