Hey ya'll, I'm a regular on the hog hunting forum but I'm posting here to hopefully help somebody out just like someone helped me... Well, I've done a ton of research on Thermal Monoculars and I finally bit the bullet on the Pulsar Quantum Lite XQ23V. I hunt hogs every night of the week on my property in East Texas and my left arm looks like Popeye and my right arm looks like Olive Oil from holding up my rifle for 2 to 3 hours a night. Finally splurged a little on a new hunting toy that's going to make my life much easier. Here is my field review of the Pulsar Monocular. I've done a ton of research so maybe you won't have to...

Excellent review. You were very thorough. It's one of the monoculars I'm considering.
Thanks!

Thanks! Thank you very much! I really appreciate to positive comment... really at the end of the day it came down to the Pulsar name. I love their scopes and knew that anything with the Pulsar name on it would be great quality.

Great job buddy. The XQ23 is amazing for the price. Beats last years unit that ran 2500.

Also, make sure you look into getting a DNV battery pack insert. Give you a rechargeable battery for it internally.

I have an ultimate night vision mdvr and cable looks almost like an RCA plug. I can get more details on the cable when I get home and look at it..

Yep, you're right. Here's the link to the cable that I had to get separately. MDVR Cable

Those are very short cables which would work if the thermal is attached to a rifle. When it is handheld and used a spotting device, it doesn't provide much distance to run the cable to a mini-DVR located in a backpack or chestpack.
So where do you locate the mni-DVR?

Where do you locate the mni-DVR? Quick and easy is just to velcro it to the side. Alternatively there are some guys selling mounts on ebay to allow you to helmet mount the monocular. I have a pouch/cable on my helmet if I need to record out of the monocular. Search on "hd19 helmet" I'm confident you would not want a cable long enough to go from your hand to your back or even your chest for that matter.

So where do you locate the mni-DVR? Well, you are quite right. I was holding the mdvr in one hand and the monocular in another. Not sure if they have longer cables...

A longer cable would work perfectly as I would have the monocular to my eye and the cable directly below in the HPG chestpack.

They don't have longer cables but there is a work around. Most guys using rifle scopes don't want a bunch of extra cable hanging around in the way and a high quality cable with a heavy duty exterior casing is really important. However, for your situation, those two things aren't a problem.
The Quantum Lite's come with a short Pulsar pigtail that converts their proprietary video out port to a female RCA port. The MDVR comes with an included cable that is pretty long (I can measure one tomorrow but I'm guessing 3ft) and on one end is the male end that plugs into the MDVR video-in port and the other end is a male RCA plug. You plug the two cables together and you don't even need the custom cable.
Moral of the story, for your specific situation, you could get by with just the MDVR and no custom UNV cable.

Very true but considering many of us are 2-3+ hours from the nearest Fry's, that's not a real option and I think all us tinkering types know Radio Shack when out the window for that stuff about 10 years ago. You could definitely buy all the pieces to make your own cable but for a guy who's never soldered or used a multimeter to test where to connect which wire to which solder point, it's not quite as easy as it sounds. It would be a whole lot of work and effort for a novice to not really accomplish anything more than using the included cables. But as an old homebrewer, I commend your spirit of ingenuity.
