It's called policing ourselves. It's starting to happen. It's about focusing on hunting the right ways, for the right reasons.
I'll just use sheep hunting since it's something I'm involved with. The majority are now openly discussing the outfits who take the "shortcuts" and (while not necessarily suggesting they be shut down) - lessening the desire for "glory hounds/box checkers" to take the shortcuts because they are being seen for what they are now.
Everyone involved knows who the helicopter/fly to the mountaintop/pen-raised outfitters are and they are openly discussed for what they are. Their operations are fewer now for that reason.
The trend towards being more open/honest about what goes on is a rising tide that floats the boats of the hunting and non-hunting community alike. And lessens the ammo for the anti-hunter PR groups with their distorted bullhorns. If something that goes on (yelling/laughing/high-fiving as an animal dies, face painted to look like Arnold in Predator 24/7, etc., etc....) makes you feel weird or doesn't feel right as a hunter - think what kind of impression it makes on non-hunters.
The antis push - we must push back. With more facts, more thought, and more class. It's the only way forward in this increasingly urbanized society where most will never hunt for anything outside the local grocery store.
It's odd for hunters to think about, but I have found that most non-hunters have simply never thought about some very basic facts: 1)Hunting is responsible for the very existence/survival of the human race; 2)Animals in the wild all die from some cause - usually a "cruel" death from a human emotional perspective; and 3)An animal dies to provide the cellophane wrapped package of meat they pick up at the grocery store.
Being removed from the direct act of killing animals for food is a very recent phenomenon in the span of human existence. It's the only reason non (and anti) hunters have the luxury to possibly consider hunting as something negative. Pure emotion with zero factual underpinning.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

It's 2017. The support only goes as far as our actions, via our posting of tasteful or non tasteful content.
We need to learn from our mistakes. Cecil the lion(100% legal hunt), Bowmar and his spear etc. Fact is social media can destroy us or exemplify us in our battle.
My post history supports 100% The good Doctor and Josh in his self made spear quest . I thought it was awesome, a guy made his own spear and took a bear with it. His content just got spear hunting band in that province. He looked like a raging crazy mindless idiot in his film to non-hunters, apparently. I get his emotion, you get his emotion but non hunters didn't, hence the ban. If he would of done a better documentary type experience, the public reaction would of been completely different.
I still support both those guys 100%, But both are perfect examples of the anti's abilities to manipulate social media perceptions
Also everyone just used a PETA app that probably has the ability to data mine.

You have some good points! I will add that one thing that we as hunters have going our way is that there are many that are scared of our food source due to hormones, antibiotics, etc..... The people that are concerned with these issues are learning to appreciate that one doesn't have to be concerned with these issues when consuming wild game.
I think that we as hunters are way over estimating our numbers! We shouldn't get to loud and proud. In todays society with all the protesting and whining we could find ourselves in a bind.
Its unfortunate that we must hide what we harvest but in a society that gets so offended its the right thing to do.
I will add Im guilty of using the peta filter, but dang!!!! IT felt good!!

My brother put my ram on FB. 95% of the replies were very positive. 2 negative. I took that opportunity to explain (with facts and numbers) how hunters are the best conservationists the world has ever known. Plus facts about how sheep are going to die - whether by old age, exposure, predation, or a bullet.
I was very surprised at the positive responses from non-hunters who said they just didn't know those things and/or had never thought about them.
We need to educate - firmly, politely, one non-hunter at a time.
I didn't do the PETA selfie thing either. I'm not worried about PC, but I do think there are better ways to make a point. And rancher - you are wrong about hunters having overwhelming support. Various hunting bans across the country have shown that is simply not true. You are way too Texas-centric in your thinking.
BC Canada is a flat out mess as far as their govt./game management is concerned. I heard all about it over the last two weeks. It's complicated, but it's really just a wreck. Proposed bans on some things, refusal to restrict on others (residents putting crazy pressure on Stone sheep herd because can hunt OTC), - lots of issues. Sad, because BC is a wilderness paradise and just a little management would keep it that way forever. First. As you well know, one will grow old waiting on me to be wrong. Second, I guess you didn't read my post. You certainly didn't understand it. 79% year over year is overwhelming. But the bigger point is that I pointed out that we in America are letting the minority control the majority. We are granting massive power and control to the "offended". That power is like crack, and we are in the situation we are in today because we APPEASE instead of challenge. I believe growing a spine is the correct medicine. This slug strategy is pathetic and ridiculously ineffective.

Not to worry, it's my job to help you. Another point to be made to non hunters is the animal in the store under the cellophane lived a lousy life compared to the life your wild meat lived. Also, when they whip the vegan attitude out just tell them to follow a plow or cultivator or harvester and see how many animals are killed to provide their "animal friendly" vegan diet. And again you're still hung up on determining how others enjoy their hunting. You celebrate how you celebrate. Don't worry about how someone else does. Those Baptist roots run deep.

Also everyone just used a PETA app that probably has the ability to data mine. It seems, (and again, in your lifetime I've never been wrong), you and NP have decided that you can effectively appease the power drunk minority who ARE in fact determining policy in many cases today. Just look at how America supports leaving statues alone at 62%, but the power drunk offended minority is getting them torn down. Before you lose your mind and delete this, that term "minority" describes the offended and includes every gender and race! I would submit - just look at how appeasement works in that situation. You two believe letting the offended few have their way (in that case tearing down a few statues, and in hunting's case, adjusting OUR behavior to fit their preference) will appease the offended. How's that workin out??? I prefer remaining a vertebrate.

Third and finally being smart about your social media content isn't bowing to anyone, I don't care about PETA radicals, I do care about my hunting privileges beyond Texas. There for I will do my best to be tasteful in my social media posts. That doesn't mean I won't post my hunting photos trophies etc, just means I'm more cogent on how I express my story. My memories are my own until I choose to share them, when I do what's the point of sharing them if they don't depict the event well, and the event is lost in translation due to my short sidedness or rush capture a picture.

Every click you make can, every thing you post online ... can and will be "data mined" at some point. Go incognito, use an IP spoofer... it'll still be tracked. The anti-Facebook stuff is silly. If you think this site isn't tracked or mined for data you are wrong. Putting a hunting pic in the PETA picture frame is silly and funny (I did it). They aren't going to gain anything from that other than probably preaching to an already closed minded group of followers.

and there is no doubt in my mind that Texas will be the last bastion of freedom in the United States. Foreign/liberal encroachment will encircle us but that won't be complete in my lifetime so the next generation will have to deal with it.

Go up to Wyoming and try to tell someone they can't shoot an animal. It's the friggin' wild west up there.

rancher I'll overlook the smarta** baits and say you make two good points in discussing reality with non-hunters.
Even though I'm confused because I thought you said it was not necessary. But, whatever. As usual, you have points and make sense a lot - just hard to see sometimes wrapped up in your trademark trolling, antagonistic attitude.

Hunting is not game of the masses but more a game of the affluent. The costs of hunting are high in most instances, whereas the cost of food is so cheap from the store. When my father as a boy, he ran a trap line and fished for much of his meat. Now, land is expensive, most people it's cheaper to going to HEB And pack their freezer that way.
PETA is a vocal minority. Nothing more.
