What say ye, are the "old style" glass front cabinets still popular, or do you think that due to theft, there are very few people buying them ?

Anyone here ever buy or think about buying one in the $1000 to $2000 price range ?

I would love to have a nice display case, but after all of my Uncle's rifles had gotten stolen out of his, I will have to go with my safe.

Not only, did they steal some very nice rifles, they also got the German Luger my other uncle brought back from Germany that was in there. Probably sold it for $50 bucks for drugs

I wouldn't think that you would see that many "Old school" wooden display cases anymore. Not these days.

Our 2 safes might as well be display cases... don't have a clue as to what the combinations are for them so they stay unlocked. Thinking when we build a house, we are just going to have a "gun room", with well a well locked steel door.

make it a hidden room.... friend has one that you walk tru a small hallway with cabinets for storage... in the middle cabint theres a latch that you open and the cabints pivit and cut the to walk ways off and theres about a 10 x10 room with all his rifles...from ends of small hall ways then room is open it just looks like cabints in the wall.. its neat... but to subject gun safe.......

Another thing on the "gun room". You better secure the walls too. Most drug addicts can fit between the 24" centered studs in a normal wall once they kick the sheet rock out. So you might think about skinning those walls with some HD plywood. Just a thought.

Aren't you afraid someone will accidentally turn the dial and lock the safe? What would you do then? I guess ou would find out how good of a safe it is!!!

No not really... the dial isn't going anywhere (one of the many uses of duct tape) & anyone who would ever have a reason to go grab a gun from one has been warned.

There might be a way to reset them..from the inside perhaps a tiny hole you poke a rod into ?

I think at this point in time, I would be just as worried about Obama getting my guns as much as I would be worried the meth heads.

My wooden gun cabinet is in the storage container, replaced by a safe in the gun room.(which is now too small since I took up reloading)

That used to be the case. In the days when builders weren't building houses as cheap as they could. But unless the home is very old, it most likely has 24" centered interior walls. At least that's what I see now, and the last 10 yrs or so. There would be a few exceptions to this, load bearing walls might be on 16's.

Either way though, we're both right. Someone could easily pass thru a wall to gain access to the room.

This one was made in the late 30's when my grand parents had a new home built in Corsicana.

It's mine now but.........the wife repurposed it in the spare bedroom.

thats right, 95% of all houses today interior walls are 24" on center.

What you gonna do when HR-45 passes and you get inspected by the gun safety control board?
I here the bill is on the move.

I have seen several really neat "gun rooms". My friend does a lot of work in some really nice new houses and he says a ton of them have secret gun rooms. I would like something like that. A hidden room behind a book shelf or have a hidden door in your closet that led to the gun room would be sweet.

I have one that my father and I hand built out of solid Walnut from a felled tree on his fathers (grandpa's) farm. Built in 1974 we put a lot of hours in it together in the work shop planning, sanding, finishing, so yes it gets used and displays firearms. It was his first piece of furniture, second piece built was a grandfather clock that also is extremely nice and has greater detail and molding.
