How many boxes of Ammo do you carry when you dove hunt?
I'm a whitetail/Duck/turkey hunter that is being invited on a business dove hunt! Be a early practice for duck/Teal in my eyes.
Just curious how much ammo or number of boxes you carry with you to the field?
Thanks

If I go over a box for a limit I'm having a bad day. I pack 2 boxes a hunt, never go over that.

Lets see you have been invited on a business dove hunt and you dont normally hunt doves. 2 boxes should be good for most hunters but I always have extra. Buy a couple more boxes dont be that guy that runs out of shells and has to borrow some shells or has to quit hunting.

Thanks I carry 1 box on me while hunting. I usually get a limit with 1 box the first couple weeks of season. Then it goes to 1.5 boxes for a limit. 2 boxes by mid Oct. But I always have more back in the truck, so I can loan some to guys that don't bring enough shells. I also now keep 3 boxes under my back seat as an emergency. I hunted one evening last year and was planning to go home after the hunt. My work schedule changed and I decided to stay and hunt the next morning. But I only had 1/2 a box of shells on me. Seymour Tx had no shells that late in the season and at that hour. I met a dude at the Seymour Sonic and he sold me 3 boxes of some old #9 shot. It salvaged the next mornings hunt. The lesson is carry as few on you while in the field as you want...but always have plenty more back in the truck.

At least 4 boxes. Just go get one of the 100 round value pack from Walmart for $25 and you will be good. Get 7.5 size shot. 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz

I'll have about 2 on me with more in the truck or mule. Some days I'll get by with just one box others it seems like I've got the donut choke in.

Just get a case then you will always have them on hand so you won't have to run to the store. You never can have too many boxes of bird shot in the closet.

I had the same thoughts as Herbie. You haven't said if this is a just a one day hunt or a weekend hunt? I would get a case of 7.5 Rio's from Academy. They wont go bad and you can use them for a lot things.

Get 1 1/8 ounce Them 1 ounce sometimes jam about 20yrs ago I bought a nice old Belgian lt12 auto-5 friction rings set light and have never had a fail w/1oz loads... maybe the inertia guns do, tho... don't have any experience w/them but hunting pals have Benelli and Stoegers... I think they use the cheap dove stuff..dont recall them fussing... now I shoot a Remm1100 sporting 20... usually shoot the cheap 7/8oz cheap stuff.. no probs. I have never seen the need for 1/1/8 stuff for dove... I am no expert dove shooter even after 50ys, but I,d almost feel cheated if I shot a 15 bird limit w/less than a box... dove are fun cuz I get to shoot a lot... besides shells are cheap entertainment...

I throw 2 cases in the back of the truck and leave them all season. Several times per year I'll run into friends with kids that have unexpected birds show up, and they run out of shells or don't have enough guns.
I promise there is little more gratifying in life than giving a young boy a box of shells and a shotgun and watching him drop his first birds for the first time.

Thanks for the input It all boils down to picking good shots, and what kind of shot you are. If you have to ask, you probably need more lol. I did a day lease once, land owner put this newbie on the best spot on the lease. This guy shot all morning long, over 4 boxes of shells, and did not hit one bird. Do yourself a favor, go to the range and shoot some clay. If you are hitting less than 50% of your targets, take a few lessons from a pro. It will make all the difference in the world, you will have a lot more fun. And in the long run, you will save a lot of money on shells, above and beyond what you spent for lessons.

I was wondering who would be THE ONE to post this B.S. I'm so hoping you are trolling us. the guy who tells me he takes one box and gets a limit, I will call BS "most" of the time. Oh yes, its been done but give us a break. then , there is .410 man...please. now, back to the OP, I take two boxes in my pouch but the truck is close by if needed. These days, if I don't get a limit, its not the end of the world. Its all about the experience.

1 box for 15 birds, that's 60%. This is not a high percent. That is a good score for me on sporting clay, but hitting dove is a lot easier than hitting clay, your eyes focus in on birds (the flapping wings draw your eyes to the target) much easier vs small orange clay targets normally going much faster than dove. And with dove, you can pick your shots, 35 yards max, bird floating into the wind to land at mojo.... no 1 box of shells for an average shooter picking his shots with lots of birds, not a stretch at all. And of course every dove hunt should include some skillet shots.

white-wings don't fly like clay targets... they can change direction in the 5/8 second of your reaction time... mourning doves ,too. sure there's ice-cream shots, but an over-eager shooter can fluff them... I'm more than guilty of that.. take away the Mojo and it's a different game altogether...
