My dog will stay as long as it is by my side. He is steady (as long as he is by my side). However, I can't get him to stay by himself to save my life. I'm at a point now I need to start baseball drills etc and can't advance until this is fixed. Suggestions would be appreciated. This is not my first retriever, but this one is one tough little booger.

Do you use an e-collar?

Irrelevant at this point in my mind. This is an on leash exercise that needs to be corrected.

1. Sit the dog.
2. Command stay if that is what you do.
3. Take one step with one foot forward. If the dog moves, correct with the leash. If the dog does not move, step back and praise the dog. Continue until the dog allows the step.
4. Take one step forward with each foot. You are now standing feet side by side 2' in front of the dog. Correct for movement.
5. Continue to increase the distance until you can move to the end of your lead (I like starting with a 6 ft leash and progressing to a 20 ft lead.)

At some point you also need to be able to walk a 360 degree circle around the dog at the end of your lead. This is best started once the dog has a good distance stay and you move back in to start the "walk around."

Once all this is done on leash, if the dog is collar conditioned you begin to correct broken sits with the e collar.

Thanks Guys.
That's what I have been doing about 4 sessions. I guess I need to keep trying and be more patient.I have been giving the correction with both the leash and e-collar. Sometimes I think I compare this dog to my old dog and set the expectations to high... Patience I guess
