I usually pick a couple of "safe guns" each year to site in and get a good kill shot. This year I will site in a Century AK-47. I'm going with a Nikon P-300 Blk scope since the 7.62x39 and .300 balistics are so similar. Where I'm hinting about 100 yards will be my max to the feeder.

Have any of you guys that has hunted with an AK made a decent deer rifle out of it?

The bullet kills the deer so an AK is fine as long as it's accurate enough at 100 yards and you are using a good bullet like a soft point or SST. I would just buy some good American hunting ammo for it.

762x39 is plenty of bullet for a deer. The question is how accurate are you with the gun? If you feel confident in your ability for a clean kill then I'd say go for it. I would only use a SP bullet and not a SST as SST's fragment like crazy, you don't want to ruin meat.

I hunt with a 7.62x39 Mini 30 I got from my Dad. I took a Hog with it yesterday from about 120 yds. I've taken a deer with it every year since I got it (5 yrs). I've never had one run more than about 15 yds and most drop where they are standing. If you feel that the 122 or 123 grain rounds are too light, Tula and Wolf make a 154 grain that really packs a wallop.

I haven't shot anything with a 7.62x39, but I see no reason it wouldn't work extremely well in the application you're describing.

The Federal Fusion is a great round too. I am partial to bonded bullets in hunting and defense though.
