I have a Remington Model 788 22-250 that I absolutely love to shoot. It has front and rear iron sights and I was wondering if I could safely remove these and still shoot the gun. I really have no desire to ever shoot it unscoped so I was wanting to take them off. Anyone know the answer?

Sure. Take them off and store them safely, and get tap plugs to fill the empty holes with if you are so inclined. It won't hurt a thing. I think Brownell's has the plugs.

I see no benefit to removing them. I don't ever plan to use the irons on my AR either, but they're nice to have in case the red dot goes out. What happens if you're on a hunt and the scope gets ruined? Those iron sights might keep you out there.

I remove them because they're ugly. I can't see well enough to use iron sights effectively anymore, but I can still see ugly.

RR you're like me, if I can't use em off they come. Also I've had scopes ride on the rear sight, so what do you do, remove em.

Like riverrider said, no problem to do it. I have the same gun and the sights were removed before I bought it. It just has filler screws in the holes.

I have a few 788s some have sights still on them while others do not. The sights they used were not that good IMO even when my eyes were.

788s here 223, 7mm-08, 30-30 and 44Mag. Yes I like that rifle design. Most have sights removed and filler screws

I always carry a spare gun so if something happens I have a backup! 50mm objective lens has the rear sights getting in the way and the front sight grabs everything when you are moving through brush or trying to get it out of the truck

If looks aren't that important you can just stick those screws back in. They'll stick up a bit, though. The last filler screws I got, I carried my rifle into Lowe's and hit their small parts bin. Poked around until I found the right screws and a matching Allen wrench.
