are the barrel nuts that go on an ar15 the same inside diameter as the ar10? Can I buy a handguard for ar15 and it work for an ar10 upper receiver and barrel?

No and No. Also there are two different patterns in the AR10 game the DPMS/SR25 and the Armalite pattern. Each have specific handguards that will work. Make sure you buy the correct handguard for the correct pattern or it will not work.

With DPMS pattern rifles they also have two different profiles of handguard, High profile and Low profile. So make sure you measure your upper or look up if it is high or low profile.
