 Turkey returning after shot at?

Ok, you turkey gurus out there. I called up three gobblers last Sunday morning to about 5ft from the popup and MISSED! Any chance they will return? Or are too smart to come back to the same spot? How long would it take to forget?
How could I miss you asking? Prolly because I was shooting a 3" 12 ga O/U with super xtra full and a super xtra turkey choke expecting a 50yd shot to where they NORMALLY show up. Don't usually get them that close and a going for the head shot the shot must whizzed right past his head.

If you were in an area that you regularly see them, then they should return.

Well if he does come back he probably wont be able to hear you. Last year I shot one with this gun at about 20ft and was a little low and ended up having to dig the wad out of one breast. Lol

I think they will be back. I called in what I thought was 2 and ended up being 3. The first one showed up while the other 2 were still gobbling just out of sight. Well, I missed a chip shot and he ran off towards the other 2. I waited about 2 hrs. and moved back in, except a different location, but same general area. Called all 3 in and killed 2 of them.

Turkeys are not as smart as some might give them credit for. They will be in the area again if that is where they like to hang out.

Try a different set up on location.... if you used decoys change it up .
He will come back...post pictures when you get him

Turkeys are not as smart as some might give them credit for. They will be in the area again if that is where they like to hang out.

There is a vast difference in being "SMART" and being "weary" Turkeys do not have the ability to reason. They do have exceptional eyesight and hearing which keeps them alive 365 days a year when they are being hunted by every meat eating critter in the wild. Sometimes being WEARY makes them appear "Smart". I have seen turkeys not know how to get out of a fence, stand for a 1/2 hour trying to get through poking their heads in the holes of the fence, I have called turkeys to my truck door. I have made turkeys gobble by clapping at them. This is not a sign of intelligence. The first 5 days after a weekend will be the hardest because they are conditioned to hunters messing with them but that will pass with time because they really do not have the ability to retain that much information in a brain the size of a grape.

Last weekend we got one and got two more in the same spot this weekend. Three others were about 150 yards away and the shot never fazed them. Id say you are good to go by next weekend.

You can ruin a good roost and push birds off the property. I try to hunt them at least 100yds away, and around a corner or some brush, from the roost. I try to plan my evening hunts to go no later than 7 PM to give the birds time to settle down and make their way back to the roost unmolested. If I have to, I'll wait till its pitch black to leave.

I think they will be back. I had a unusual situation, had as many as 18 hens around and no gobblers. Finally I see 3 gobblers headed my way but they were 150 t0 200 yards away. So I get excited get the old call out and hit it 3 or 4 times....the gobblers turned and ran the other way.
