This will be my second year hunting ducks and I am wanting to do my own calling this coming season. I need some suggestions as to some good calls to consider. I don't neccesarily want to start with total begginer call, but am not interested in dropping alot of cash into a call that requires expert skill. Something that you can learn on, but that is quality enough to keep as a go to . Any help is appreciated.

I would start with some thing that has a cd with it I know the buck gardner calls and rich-n-tone both have calls out that come like that in the package. If you want a good call and don't want to spend to much money sportsmans warehouse had the HS acrylics for 55 bucks I think and those are awsome calls for the money. you also may want to try the duck commander calls they sound pretty good to and are a littel cheaper. I am sure some one else will come along and help you out some more.

Hello postal_g , Welcome to the Texas Hunting Forum! Have you ever blown a Duck Call? For a beginner who has never blown a call, I would suggest a "Single Reed" call. Get a CD, tape or go to a park with a duck pond & listen to the ducks. Listen to "who" does "what when" & how they react. The "Double Reed" is Not for a beginner. Throat, breath control, tone are just to advanced for a beginner with no experience (JMHO). I have two that I carry, one is a "single reed", the other a "double reed". Why..you ask? As you stated " Something that you can learn on, but that is quality enough to keep as a go to". I learned on the single reed, moved on to the double. I think that at times you just need to have both, if one is just not what the ducks want to hear. Plus they will get wet, reed will stick, so you need a back-up. Good Luck in selection & Good Hunting!

I also would agree tot he fact that a CD would be quite beneficial. I also HIGHLY recommend a few other things as well. IF you hunted this past season and feel you did fairly well with the people you did hunt with then get with that caller. Or at least talk to a freind or someone you know that can help you out. At the same time practice. On your way to work, school, at home, wherever. Keeping in mind not just learning the specific calls but at what times to utilize them. Two more things, if you by chance have the money, go acrylic. I used poly carbonate through high school, college and until I was in my career that I am in now. Until a few years ago, I only wondered about the high dollar calls. Now, I no longer wonder. I think the crisp sharp sound bouncing off of them is worth it's weight in gold. That is just my opinion. I know there are many others who swear by their polys but you may always find yourself wondering what owning one might be like especially when you look at the 13 -14 poly calls that you will eventually go through trying to find the one you like for the field. The other thing is a simple rule of thumb, sometimes not calling at all is your best chance at a flock of birds.

HS makes a diamond wood for about $50 or $60 bucks. I use it and it is an awesome call. I do feel it is not for the beginner. It is hard to control if your not good at it. I think your money can be spent better. HS makes a good one for about $20 and it has a good sound. It is easier than the Diamond wood. I just can't remember the name of it. They have it at Bass Pro or Gander Mountain. Ditto to who posted the last post. Sometimes no or little calling is the best way to go. Welcome to the sport and if your lucky it will change from a sport to an addiction, stay with it.

start with one you can blow and go from there...I have a drawer full of old calls, a lanyard full of my favorites....teal whistles, mallard drake calls...etc.. I have some from $16 up to $100 plus...though one of my acrylic calls still sticks and has been back to the guy who makes it three times, it just freezes up...maybe it is too much spit..LOL or copenhagen....

Yeah, I was hooked after the first trip. We were lucky enough to hook up with a good group of guys that meet up for "duck camp" every year at choke canyon. They taught us a bunch, except,of course, their best spots. They invited us back next season as well. I've just been looking forward ever since. Turkey season only quelled the desire for a short time, and teal season isn't soon enough . Come on September.
