It is my goal someday to attend the Quigley Match with my .45-70. The match has shots from 350-800 yards on different sized targets. Here is a link to the different targets.

http://www.quigleymatch.com/target-info.html

Without having to shoot at those distances how can I make a target that would be the equivalent size at say 100 yards? Is it as easy as dividing the target size by the number of times farther the distance is?

For example the buffalo is 5' x 7' and is 800 yards away. Would I divide the target by 8 to get a similar size target at 100 yards? If that is how it works the Buffalo would be 7.5" x 10.5".

Basically, yes. You are scaling the target down in size for 100 yards. But I will tell you this with all certainty, shooting a scaled down target at 100 will be totally different than shooting the actual target at 800 yards with that set up. However, shooting those 45-70 rifles at those distances with the sights they use is truly amazing. The center of the targets though, are much smaller than the animal. I would think the scoring would be in the white. Find you a good long range .458 bullet, and work up a good load for it. Let us know how you do!

Something like the Barnes Original (#30613) 400 grain with a spire point for increased BC would be a decent choice. Or a heavy 450-500+ grain lead bullet with a somewhat rounded nose profile (non flat nose) would help at the longer ranges.

Thanks Chad. I bought 4 different styles of bullets this week to give them a try.I think the lightest was 500 grains and the biggest was 545. Going to load them with H4198 and Goex 2f and compare the two.

I can easily shoot 600 yards at my families property but for now I want to focus on close distances.

Awesome!! Good luck with it!!! I have always wanted to shoot the Sharp's rifles with their sights at long range.
